[SOLVED]Reinstall security/permissions woes :(

Windows 7 Professional x64 fully updated.
Generic PC

I regularly reinstall Windows for various reasons and normally manage to fairly easily overcome the equally various issues that arise from doing so (never learn!).

This time however, I'm stumped as to why one particular problem is proving really frustrating to try & fix.

I have 3 drives with around 12 partitions spread over them as I like to have things organised and to ensure that files are less likely to perhaps get overwritten etc.

As there were no other changes being made to drives or partitions I expected drive letters to remain stable and that I'd be able to easily import saved items e.g. pictures etc back into the clean Windows and so on which hasn't quite gone to plan. But my main issue is in being able to save back into the other drives/partitions etc - get that common error msg about not having access rights or whatever & today have been driven mad by just getting constant file errors on trying to install software into a partition on one of the other drives and also saving images into another one.

I did go & do a search over the weekend on the problem & found it a common one, The main solution suggested was running the Reg fix Take Ownership which I have done - endlessly but to no avail. I can understand not maybe being able to run say a program installed in the previous version of Windows which might cause a conflict with the new one, but why on earth can I not save images to a different drive that has nothing to do with Windows itself?? Surely it should be able to recognise those partitions/drives etc when installing & make them then available to the new version?? Does Windows stick something into those drives that only that install of Windows can recognise - if so, is there a file somewhere I could then just remove to stop it doing that?

I really need to get this figured out for future as this is wasting so much time I can ill afford.

Anyone got the patience to help me out on it a bit further perhaps? ]
Thanks
Romayne :)

Take ownership only adds a menu so you can then take ownership of folders is that what you have done. What folders give the problem if it's from a old version of Windows the old user will have rights not you even if the name is the same

Yeh - the folders are all on a separate drive in different partitions other than the Windows one. The frustration is that I've reinstalled Windows countless times often under totally different names e.g. Windows 7, Windows Main, my name etc and not had the problem quite so stubborn to resolve. Usually running the Take Ownership 'app' or whatever it is works & I can save into the folders in question - just not this time.

So how do you overcome old version users still somehow floating around on the system? Is there anything else similar to T/O that will give me proper ownership rights for ALL my drives etc rather than having to work with every single folder of the dozens of dozens that I have? :(

In addition to the take ownership (or indeed in place of it), I just go into the security permissions of the root of each drive, Add full control to my current user ID. (this is where you may sometimes also need to take ownership if it is not set to Administrators Group), and remove any unparsed SIDs the S....... entries. Next step is to go to advanced and set the rights to cascade to all the lower levels, (sometimes you will hit a segment that will not cascade correctly but will normally just need a repeat of the actions as user for the root)

You're a GEM - thanks SO much for helping me out guys - I think that seems to have finally sorted out the issue and in a way I could actually understand as I've read info previously on permissions etc but always got lost as to how to actually apply settings etc.

Truly APPRECIATED :)
