Reiteration of forum rules

All new members should be required to read though the forum rules.

I just witnessed a thread (which I was participating on) in which a member referenced torrent downloads and even provided a link.

I was flabergasted at this and hoped the member seeking help did not go for it. He didn't.

Using torrents is the best example of piracy I know and I am greatful it has no place here.

I hope you reported the post? Maybe all new members could be directed to the rules thread before they are allowed to post? I've seen that on forums, but don't know if it is a possibility with this forum.

I have to disagree with your last statement:

Using torrents for downloads does not constitute piracy by itself... rather, it is the file in question that is being downloaded. I downloaded Ubuntu via torrent from Ubuntu.com and that is a legal download. So, as worded, your statement is not completely true.

9 times out of 10 it is piracy. when its open source, then its fine.

I'm not going to talk figures I don't know... But even the above statement is not exactly on point. Downloading drivers from Asus.com gives you the option to download via P2P, i.e. torrent.

My point is that there are legitimate uses for torrent. Because it has been used in the way to distribute copyrighted works illegally doesn't mean the act of using a torrent is itself illegal.

I agree. It depends on what you're downloading from torrents.

There is no real way to make someone read the rules thought. You could bug them and bug them, They are just going to bypass it, Thats unless they are honest people like most of the people here I know. Just my 2 cents:huh:

If something appears to be a flagrant breach of the rules, simply report it.

The mods will deal with it.

Meanwhile the same people involved boast/brag/talk about running "hacked" XP.
A definition of hacked would also be handy.

Hacked doesn't always mean illegally hacked.
You can "hack" a windows install CD to be able to install any versions (starter, home, HP, Pro, Ult). This is legal. You still need the appropriate key to install that version, but it is a huge help to computer technicians who only need 2 CDs instead of 12.

The mods don't ban people for using genuine software that was messed up by an update. They are EXTREMELY good at discovering who is and isn't legal, and when there is simply a problem.
