I prefer to keep my user account on another drive so if I had to suddenly format c: for some reason I could do so knowing that my documents etc were safe.

The last time I tried relocating the account it said the account wasnt completely synced and some of the folders like favorites had disappeared from c:\users\<account>.

Whats the best way to relocate the account and is it possible to move c:\users\<account> as a whole?

It is possible to relocate a whole account to a different drive but will cause complications once you format/replace your main OS as Windows security will tend to lock it up even if you're using the exact credentials.

The most recommended way of accomplishing this task is to just relocate main folders to a different drive/partition. You can do this to the following folders;
Contacts
Desktop
Downloads
Favorites
Links
My Documents
My Music
My Pictures
My Videos
Saved Games
Searches

To move these folders to a different location, just right-click>properties>location and choose a location

After completing these steps, your files are covered and is not affected by any problems your OS might encounter.

Note: To avoid windows making duplicates of relocated folders, in Folder Options (in Control Panel), enable "Show hidden files and folders". Now when you're asked to replace files and folders, select to copy and replace all. If a single file is left, expect a duplicate. You can safely remove the duplicate folders after a restart by renaming it first then delete it. Others might be able to delete this straight off.

Let me know how this turns out for yah or if you need further information ;)

Would definitely be nice if I could just move the whole 'username' folder to another drive. Sending feedback.

Yes, its really a bit fiddly but after you're done, you can safely mess up your system without doing harm to your files :p No headaches :)

I personally do this and have all my files located on different partitions as a rule.

Recovering Users Files / Folders from Dos

I managed to damaged the hard drive on a Toshiba Laptop that I installed the Win 7 7100 RC on- I cant boot the drive and have been unable to recover the files when I pull the drive out and hook it up to a usb cable and connect it to another computer.

Can someone provide guidance on how to copy the everything in my user folder from the win7 recovery console DOS/ command prompt?

How can I do that with only command prompt access via the recovery console?
