Hey everyone I am having the worst time setting up RDC
I have 2 laptops that have windows 7 ultimate and they are connected to my belkin wireless g router I've followed many tutorials on how to do rdc but when I connect to my other laptop for RDC it asks for my credentials I typethe correct information and it does not work so could please help me and then from their I would like to acces my remote laptop from anywhere
The problem with RDC with computers of this nature is the fact that unless they are part of the domain, they don't really 'share' credentials properly.
Let's put this in a proper scenario here.
You have LaptopA and LaptopB, those are the names of the Laptops.
You setup user 'Johndoe' on LaptopA and LaptopB. You also set them up with the same password.
The problem that arises at times is that when LaptopA tries to RDC to LaptopB in a normal, non-domain setup... LaptopB is seeing you trying to logon, at times, as LaptopA\JohnDoe. So LaptopB tries to go, "Okay, LaptopA\JohnDoe, I see you are trying to log on, but I don't have a LaptopA\JohnDoe in my local user list. Access Denied."
Even though you log on with username JohnDoe, sometimes it does not assume you are logging onto the computer... Sometimes it does.
If you want to be absolutely sure it will let you log in correctly, you log in with <computername>\<username> for the username.
Sometimes in a failed attempt, it will put in the username as what you are attempting. Hopefully it will show you are doing <computername>\<username>, where the computername is the computer you are trying to connect.
Now, lastly, this is ASSUMING, you also told the machine to allow the user to connect with RDC. This is a REQUIRED must for RDC to even allow a user to remotely log on with RDC, short of also checking that you allowed the appropriate RDC Ports through both Windows Firewall and any hardware firewall that sits between the computer you are RDCing to and the computer you are using RDC to get to it.
One other thing to note... If you intend on RDCing to your laptop at home, from behind a router from some commercial ISP... Don't expect it to work.
The reason why, is given how RDC expects to know where it is connecting to, just having your computer sitting on and ready to accept connections, it won't work to the rest of the world. Part of the reason is that you would have to be sitting behind a static IP address. Ideally, your router is also setup with a VPN like connection. Most home ISPs do not provide static IPs, which means it can randomly change at any given time. Also, if you setup your router to port forward RDC connections to your computer inside, it might leave you open for attacks as you never know where you are going to connect from unless you had a nice router that will allow you to setup VPN tunneling to do it properly.
Now, if you want to be able to remote control your computer, you may have to look at some alternatives. Logmein would be one option, where it should provide a secure SSL type connection and have your computer speak with their server for you to connect to your computer anywhere, similar to GotoMyPC and Citrix, although Logmein and GotoMyPC are somewhat questionable as you are having your computer chat with the outside world to help facilitate a connection remotely.
