remote desktop is it possible

hi all

my problem is that after rdc from work to home puter i disconnect the session from work which leaves the home puter sitting at the log on screen which means sql server is not running so mportal can record the set recordings until i get home and log on again .

is there some way of ending the sesssion of rdc and leave the home puter logged on as it was before the rdc session started.

According the the very *bottom* of Microsoft XP Professional Remote Desktop just close the RDClient and it should not log you off....

hi finally got to give it a try and even if i close the rdc window i am still logged out of the home puter

as soon as i log in it logs the home puter off

I connect from work to home almost every day. I can leave a program open and running on the home computer and open and close the rdc without affecting it. Now if you are connected via rdc and someone tries to login at the remote end then rdc will disconnect. XP only allows one login at a time.

they are both win7 machines and even rdc at home on my own network results in the remote machine logging off as soon as i connect with the other one

I tried RDP with my seven and clearly my account was not logged off after closing rdp session.

It should be locked, but not logging off.

Did you try to a remote connection with an other account ?

i can log back in no problem but i want mportal to still keep recording on the puter i am rdc into after i disconnect
so when the desktop is locked it cant keep recording my scheduled programs

i will try tonight maybe it will work if i close the window instead of logging off and see if it works maybe the screen is just locked and not logged off

if the user name you use to run your at dvr at home is different from the user you login as during rdc, then rdc will log you out of that user when you remote desktop in. if it's the exact same user account then that won't happen and clicking on the X on the rdc window should keep that user signed in after your remote session.

Hi there
If you are running some sort of MySQL (or other server) then using RDP isn't the best way of accessing your home computer.

One way (there are probably a load of others) would be to set your home computer up as a Webserver (something like using Apache, Php and Mysql) -- As you are using RDP I should imagine you are using something like No-IP (No-IP - Dynamic DNS, Static DNS for Your Dynamic IP) or similar for giving you a domain so you can reach your home machine even if your ISP gives you dynamic IP addresses.

Another way would be to set up your home computer as a VPN ("Virtual Private Network"). This would allow multiple logons and there's plenty of free software around so you can set this up -- beware however not a task for the faint hearted.

The web server idea is probably the simplest -- you could also enable FTP as well if you need to access data files.

RDP is fine for multiple users if you are running a SERVER OS (on your Home machine).

Depending on what you actually want to do I'd look at the Apache Php Mysql web server idea (forget Microsoft's complex Internet Server).

This is called WAMP in a Windows environment or LAMP in a Linux environment.

There's stuff all pver the web showing how this can be done

for example
Install PHP 5 Apache MySQL on Windows : WampServer

it seems to be working as i can still run the media portal client and watch tv after closing the rdc connection so it should be able to start the recordings as well
i wrongly assumed i was logged off of the main pc because of the screen being locked and having to log back on to access the pc after th rdc session

i assumed it was still logged off the same as when i was logging off the session and not just closing it with the x

There's 2 differents things:

Logging off the local user
Logging off the remote connection.

From a RDP you can logg off the local user but you have to do it from the "local GUI" like Start Menu -> logg off.

When you logg off the remote desktop it only cut the remote connection.. that's all. By the way the local computer is locked because desktop licence of Windows doesn't allow multiple session at the same time (and remote desktop is like a session). You can have multiple account launched at the same time, but you can not access to them. It's one after the other (test with WIN+L user switching).
So the local computer is locked not because you logg off the RDP, but because you logg on with RDP
