Remote Desktop!!

I am a helpdesk technician and use remote desktop to assist users to install software.. however on windows 7 when right clicking and run as administrator/run as other user it does not allow me to remotely type in the credentials.. is there a way of enabling this as it is essential i am able to do this.

Hi there
First on your OWN machine I assume you've set up RDP properly and its running Windows 7 Professional or above.

Then you have to enable remote desktop on the REMOTE machines as well. I think also if the TARGET or REMOTE machine is Home premium then you've had it -- You need Windows 7 Professional and above (Ultimate, Enterprise).

You can use Home premium as an RDP CLIENT but not as a server.

If the remote machine IS W7 Pro or above the remote machine needs to have the Incoming connections allowed and if it is on the other side of a router Port forwarding to the (remote) machines internal LAN address needs to be set up too.

When i click run as administrator when logged in remotely it shows up a big pause button with black background and only the local user can see the username and password box

I don't know too much about domain controllers -- but what happens if you type the actual IP address of the remote computer on the main RDP menu.


I think you need to have an account enabled on the remote machine too for it to throw up the password screen and you MUST have a password on it.

I think you are looking for something like Desktop sharing or remote assistance which is a different issue.

We used to use things like Netmeeting for this -- I don't think this works anymore with Windows 7.

You could take over a users desktop and run a program as administrator etc.

Bog standard RDP merely allows you to LOGON remotely to another computer -- which if you do to a Windows non server machine will EJECT the logged on user.

Perhaps some of THESE apps might be more what you are looking for

It almost sounds like its a resolution issue on the target machine that isn't allowing your prompt to show properly.
a: You can configure the RDP console for display options, click the options drop down box to proceed.

basically im on the remote machine on a standard user, they need help running a program that requires administrator privelidges. So when i go to run program as administrator it shows a black screen on my side and only at the local machine does it show the box to enter credentials which obviously is not suitable as they cannot have the administrator password

is the user sharing the desktop or just the program? if its just the program this is normal as you are blocked from seeing other programs than the program that is shared.

some programs black out boxes, others fill with patterns like white with tan lines crossing the window that is hidden

Have you tried Restarting the session?

still sounds like a resolution issue to me, change client resolution and console display options and try.

Get the full computer name from the My computer/properties

Run>mstsc.exe /console

and log into their computer maybe with the Admin name pass. you might need to put in the Domain in the username example DN\<admin>

this will kick the current user out though, but you will have complete access to the machine.

Edit: I have not used this in Win7, but this is how I do it in XP

Hey i think i have a solution to your issue, you need to disable desktop dimming.

What are User Account Control settings?
