Remove Check Boxes ???

Hello,
Last night, while going through a very informative troubleshooting thread with some of your knowledgeable members, I came across an option to when something is clicked to pick, it displays a checkmark box. On everything! I've find that I dislike this immensely. To my caprice and chagrin, I've forgotten where to find the option so that I can turn off this feature. Can anyone advise me on the method to remove what I personally consider a distracting thing.
Any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

As noted, you nailed it. Thank you for your experience and knowledge and the right answer. I don't know what possessed me to change it, Ahhhhhh its back to the way it was. Same as it ever was! Talking Heads reference.
