I had the same problem with that thin white bar after "auto hide" taskbar, so I noticed the issue is related to the aero view of the desktop, so I simply clicked on the desktop and picked the "Windows 7 basic" theme.

I've stumbled across this topic and also wanted thank Generator for the two simple files. Here is a trick how to use them more conveniently: Add shortcuts of both the hide.exe and show.exe to your start menu and assign keyboard shortcuts (ctrl + alt + key of your choice) to them.

Hi Generator,

I've added your hidetaskbar.exe to my Startup folder, but upon startup it only gets rid of the Windows Start Button icon (however that area is still clickable and will bring up the Start Menu). The taskbar is still visible and auto-hidden.

Found a fix for this myself. Instead of adding it to the Startup folder, I created a new Scheduled Task and had it delay 30 seconds before triggering. Works like a charm now.

I can remove your taskbar 100% but you will still be able to open the Start Menu with the Windows key on your keyboard if that's any good to you. :)

I found the C# source code here but it came as code for a small application with two buttons (one to hide the Taskbar and Start Button and one to show them again). I've modified the code to automatically do what you want upon running it and then it exits, it uses the Windows API so there isn't any dirty hacks involved either.

To make life easier I made it into two exe's, one does the hiding and the other one shows it again.

Simply extract the exe's to your Windows folder and create a shortcut to the 'HideTaskbar.exe' in the Start Menus 'Startup' folder to make it happen upon each bootup.

EDIT: Works for Vista too btw!

Update 2019: Works with Windows 10. After hours of searching this seems to be the only tool on earth that can perform this. But sadly it works only for a few minutes and than resets automatically.
