Solved removing bootscreen entry

Can anyone offer some advice?

When I bought my new PC, windows 7 would not boot. I reinstalled Windows 7 over the top and this seemed to fix the problem.

However, I now have 2 windows 7 entries on the initial boot screen.

They both seem to open the same version of windows. So would it be safe for me to edit the boot screen and remove one of the entries?

Also, there is a folder called windows.old - can I just delete this with disk clean?

Some advice before I proceed would be gratefully accepted!

Yes, you can remove one of the entries, just make sure you remove the right one. And Disk Clean is a good way to remove the Windows.old folder.

A Repair Install may have been less problematic.

You can also access it from msconfig under the Boot tab:

Just click Advanced Options, select the boot entry you want to delete and click Delete.

The first entry in the boot list should be your current installation so you'd need to delete the second entry.

Before you delete the Windows.old folder just double-check there's nothing in there that you may want to move and save elsewhere.

Just one other thing...

on the system configuration tab I have two boot options,

1. Windows 7 (C:\Windows) : default OS

and,

2. Windows 7 (\Windows) : current OS

when I highlight number 2, the option to delete is greyed out. When I highlight number 1, the option to set as default is greyed out. Does this therefore mean that I should delete the first one?

What do you reckon?

Yes. As Option 2 is the current OS it will be the active and/or system partition and therefore Windows will stop you from deleting it.

Option 1 is the one that will show first (i.e. default) when you boot up, but you don't want it so just delete it.

Perhaps you actually have 2 separate installs of Windows 7 and simply deleting one entry in msconfig will not remove the second install; please post a snip/screen-shot of the entire disk management drive map with a full description as to which drive/partition is which, so we can see what you have going on as there may be a fairly simple way to resolve the situation.

In the Windows start menu right click computer and click manage, in the left pane of the "Computer Management" window that opens click disk management and post a maximized snip of that.

Yes, that only shows that you have one Windows 7 installed.

From your post above, you would need to set your "Current" OS #2 as the new default and delete #1.
