Repair Install Deactivated Windows, don't have Key, recovery possible?

I need to recovery my Software Key for Windows after a Repair Install. Stupidly didn't back it up.

So I swapped mobo's and ran into some problems so I did a repair install to resolve them. After the Repair Install, Windows deactivated and is asking for my key again. Unfortunately I do not have my key and I am unsure whether I will be able to find it again (having moved around a few times, I am unsure if I even have the install disks). After swapping mobo's Windows did NOT deactivate, everything was fine activation wise after the swap. I don't suppose there is any way to recover my key, is there?

Right now, I've noticed that a new folder was created during the upgrade called $WINDOWS.~Q that seems to have my old registry in there, so I am thinking of trying to back up my current (new) registry and replacing it's files with the ones in that folder and running Belarc to see if it picks up the key then and then putting my new registry back. Anyone have any thoughts on this? Advice? Ideas other than this?

If the problem is the latter, then nothing will save you, except a clean install with legitimate media.

Can you point out what problems there are with the file system? It may be because of the Repair Install (I have horrible luck with Upgrade Installs, and prefer to do Clean but I am working on my gf's drive and install, and she didn't want to deal with reinstalling and redoing everything).

The installation is 100% legitimate installed from genuine media, about 3 years ago. This motherboard is actually this install's original mobo, this drive was on a different rig for a little while because it had a better GPU/CPU but I swapped back to this mobo because it's a G41 chipset and capable of 8GB of DDR3 where as the mobo that had the better CPU/GPU was a G31 chipset and 8 GB of DDR2 is prohibitively expensive.

So if you want things just layed out:
Started with two desktops
Desktop 2 had better CPU/GPU
Desktop 1 had better mobo
Put Desktop 1's hard drive in Desktop 2 to have access to files and to boot from both installs without having 2 desktops at the desk at once
Eventually put Desktop 1's motherboard in Desktop 2
Now Desktop 2 has Desktop 1's motherboard
The install having problems is Desktop 1's install, because even though it is the original mobo for this install, it had problems and required a Repair Install.

Now that I have hopefully satisfied any curiosity by providing excess amounts of most likely unneeded information... If I was using illegal software, I wouldn't be posting here asking how to recover my key after forgetting to back it up. You could be a bit less accusing

You still haven't said what License type you have - Retail or OEM?

I am very deliberately NOT accusing you of anything - but I need to know, or I wouldn't ask.

That error combination is a rare one - and is likely teh result of deliberate tampering with the WAT system.

I suggest that you uninstall the KB971033 and reinstall it - then run another MGADiag report.

Unless you have the proper Key from the Win7 package, or there is a COA sticker for Win7 attached to the box, there is nothing we can do for you, as the Key is no longer in the registry, having been replaced by the Default Key which cannot be activated.
