My trusty HP 8560W had a catastrophic SSD failure about a month ago, so we re-installed Windows 7 Pro in exactly the same way that we did when I first bought the machine in 2016 to install that SSD. This is at least the third re-install of Windows as the laptop was secondhand via a Microsoft authorised reseller.
I also have a Windows 10 tower PC and tablet, but I much prefer Windows 7 (Classic) and would like to retain it for the life of this laptop which given its build quality and serviceability could be a long time.

Phone activation does not work (tried three times), and I spoke to an MS agent who also did the groups of numbers thing, and he was also unable to help. Diagnostic report attached below.

Thanks in advance,
Steve

Hi Steve,

nothing showing in the report as to why it doesn't like the key.

update--- please check system BIOS date, and OS time report is showing 9/12/20

Lets do this please REMOVE the current key, from an admin command prompt

slmgr.vbs /upk

Please update your bios its dated 2011, suspect the problem is its not reading the data correctly.

https://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp78001-78500/sp78085.exe

reboot

if im correct it will pickup the original oem key

please rerun the mgadiag tool

Hi Roy,

That sounds like a plan! BIOS isn't an area I'm familiar with; of the options available on HP laptops going to the Device Manager and looking for the latest 'driver' for BIOS sounds the most straightforward. First though I need to reproduce the backup script that I lost in the SSD crash because it's over four weeks since my last data backup! Will also look into finding room for a full system backup as well.

Will report back on how I get on.

Many thanks,
Steve

The bios isnt in device manager you should have a hp assistant tool which will check for updates and apply the BIOS update which you should run on power with a full battery

On my HPs I have all ways used When a new BIOS update becomes available, HP Support Assistant can update your computer automatically. HP computers with Windows come with HP Support Assistant (HPSA) installed.

Have updated BIOS to the latest version (2014) via HP Support Assistant. I removed the product key and re-booted. It's now asking me for a product key to activate, so I think we can assume it hasn't found any OEM key lurking in the BIOS data. System BIOS date was checked (F10 on startup) and that matched my phone which happily agrees with the time in the system tray. 12th September 2020 would in fact be the day that we re-installed Windows 7 triggering the whole re-activation saga.

Incidentally at the start of the activation window I had four updates that had failed, over the month this has reduced to three and now there are two failed important updates. I ran diagnostics (SFC and something else) on Windows Update today as per other threads, and they found nothing amiss.

Looking at MGADiag output although further down it says Product Key not found, yet the old Product Key is still partially shown at the top. I've clearly entered a sort of twilight zone - which is correct?!

now this will cause activation problems, were not in december yet!!!

please re-check both your system and bios dates/times,
note the above date could be "American" style, based on what you said about the install, i do hope you setup as UK.

Hi Roy,
Assuming American date formatting on the MGADiag report the date and time are entirely consistent with the 'event' of Windows 7 being installed triggering activation. On this PC I can confirm that Region is UK (English), Time Zone is London etc. and short dates dd/MM/yyyy.

Hi SIW2,

I'm a UNIX guy really, but unzipped the file to find some sort of licence file and a command file. I opened a command window running as administrator, changed directory to the unzipped folder and ran the command file.

My trusty Win 7 Pro laptop, which must indeed have been built that way - now has a valid product key - as close to magic as it gets! Many thanks for sorting this for me!

Those files will be on my data backups!

Thanks again,
Steve
