Resident Evil 2 Stuttering Issue

Is anyone else having this issue? The framerate would be a smooth 60 fps if it weren't for the constant stuttering. At irregular intervals it just freezes for a split second and sometimes hangs for a whole second.

I've tried every single fix that I've googled like updating the drivers and lowering the settings. No matter what I do, nothing seems to work. I thought it might be a hardware issue, but I starting to think it's just that my aging PC that can't handle 2019 games. I've wasted a lot of time in the same area of the game trying to troubleshoot this issue, and somehow racked up steam's play time counter to 5 whole hours while doing it. Now I can't refund it because of that and have to either give up or fix this issue somehow.

Hi Twario,

It sounds like the graphics card. I assume that you have checked the website of the graphics card for the latest drivers!

Have you got lots of things running in the background?

Hello Twario

Yes, I have had this problem before on other games. I had to opt for lower graphics settings. I'd play the game at lower settings for several hours, then, when everything was smooth, i'd up the settings fractionally, to see if it would operate at the new custom settings.

As it is a new game, I'd wait for the game publishers to release updates for the game via steam. It is not too uncommon for patch fixes to optimise performance of the game engine.

Paul Black - I have updated the drivers to 19.1.2 but it doesn't seem to make a difference. I did try turning off all non-essential background processes, but that only marginally helped.

iko22 - I've tried lowering every setting but the stuttering is still nearly identical. I'm starting to think this is a problem with my rig, not the game.

That is odd I must admit, unless the Crimson GPU driver global options are overriding the in-game settings? Worth checking what the global options are and see if changing them make a difference.

I found out that freesync was on in the game's profile, but turning it off doesn't seem to have an effect. One bright side to this is now I'm positive this is a GPU issue. There was a performance change when I set vsync to "always off" in the application settings and turned it off in game. After I did this the stuttering was 10x worse, so at least now I know it's the likely cause to this problem. I can't afford a GPU replacement ATM, so I'm not sure what I'll do next because this doesn't seem like it can be fixed in software.

That is not quite how vsync works. Vsync is there to prevent the GPU flooding the monitor with graphic frames. It is kind of telling the GPU to cool down a bit. On that Information, I would look at the monitor refresh rate. Vsync ensures that the monitor refresh rate can keep up with the GPU frame rate. So, if you are looking for an improvement, and cant wait for game patches, then I'd consider a different monitor with a higher refresh rate (Hz). Your GPU and CPU meet the game requirements, so there is no technical reason why they should not deliver, when you play this game.
