Solved Resolution display problem

The last few days, after having computer on for 5 hours or so, the screen goes blank and shuts down.
When I restart it the screen resolution is way lower than it should be at 1920x1200 for a 24" screen.
The display is almost like it is in safe mode but after booting up it doesn't say safe mode.
I go into change resolution and it shows 800x? a very low resolution and that box is grey and won't allow me to change it to 1920x1200.

Is this a sign of the card going bad or is there a quick fix for this problem?

If I turn it off for an hour or two it will boot up with the correct resolution. No it is not set for hibernating.
Any and all help appreciated.

Have you checked temperatures ?
Maybe it is overheating for a faulty fan or dust ???
HWMonitor has a free version that might help.
HWMonitor CPUID - System & hardware benchmark, monitoring, reporting

They also have a portable/standalone version if you don't want to install it.

The temps were ok but in Device Manager Yield sign shows Code 43..




Is this a hardware issue?

It could be a hardware issue, or a driver problem.
I'd re-install the drivers and see if it helps.

Dave,
Did the uninstall and went to Nvidia and found the right driver.
Now waiting for it to install to take place.
It's a big file so the install is time consuming.
Will get back (soon) and let you know how things are going.

Thanks for your input. I had did an uninstall before and had problem downloading the Nvidia driver.
This time I followed (step by step) and realized the first time after I uninstalled it from Device Manager I didn't do a reboot before downloading the Nvidia driver. Not sure if that had anything to do with anything but it did download completely.


Download finished/ rebooted/ and display is now working.
However when I clicked on browser(Google) multiple tabs opened on taskbar? Closed them one by one then the screen
went dark/shut the computer down and restarted. Just opened it again and clicked on Google, just once, and sure enough multiple tabs opened but I closed all but the one I am on which is working.

In device manager everything is normal again. The display is on the correct settings for a 24" monitor.

Computer is over 8+ years old which maybe my desktop is thinking of retiring.
Glad I have a laptop that is a little younger as a backup.
