Restarts instead of shutting down

Just recently, my computer has taken to restarting itself instead of shutting off.

I have tried changing the reboot bits in regedit, and I don't think it is wake on lan.

I have checked the system restore files and there are critical updates going back to about the 20th April but I can't remember when this started happening. Less than week though I think.

When I click on the shut down button, it switches off, and then just comes back on again. I have to shut down the PC about 2 or 3 more times before it finally stays off.

Any ideas please?

1. Just a thought -
Start >Device Manager >Network Adapters>Right click each item listed > select Properties >Power Management >Uncheck the "allow this device to wake the computer" box (on each item) individually, to see which one might be the culprit.

2.The other possibility-
The BIOS code controls much of the hardware-level power management and power state functionality, and bugs in the BIOS can easily manifest themselves in this way.

I have filled out my system specs as best I can, I hope that will help you.

I have attached the SiSoft Sandra report too, which will give you more detail than I could.

The problem exists still today (first attempt to shut-down resulted again in a restart).

Your first suggestion was already done, just the 1 network adapter, and all boxes are unchecked.

I had a look at the BIOS briefly, but am very reluctant to change anything in there for fear of doing something wrong and the whole darn PC not even starting afterwards or something!


In REGEDIT I set an autoreboot parameter to 1 from 0 someone suggested, but that made no difference (PowerAfterShutdown).


Windows has created 4 restore points for Critical Updates on 21st April, 25th April & two on the 27th April. I wonder if one of those coincided with the start of the problem - as far as I can remember that may well fit the time-frame for the problems though I can't narrow it down any further (my memory is like a sieve!).

OK, quick update...

Just that on the last 4 shut-downs, I tried on:

Run 1, when I turned of my monitor, the PC stayed powered down.
Run 2, I left the monitor on, and the PC restarted.
Run 3, same as Run 1.

These were consecutive attempts at switching off, over a period of minutes.


Run 4, same as Run 1, after playing Call of Duty for 90 minutes, and browsing a couple of forums.


So maybe then, it is something to do with the monitor being switched on?

Thanks Paul for doing the System Specs.

You mentioned in post 3 this current problem may have started after one of the latest updates....
For troubleshooting purposes you might consider using System Restore to roll back to a date prior to installing the updates and the problem you now have.
Ascertain if shut down works correctly.
Then download one update at a time, to see which if any might cause the problem.
