I have a new compaq computer which can preinstalled with OS 7 and it has a OS 7 recover partition. I install XP onto this machine and now i want to restore it to OS7. However, on the boot menu it does not give me the option to recover 7. I dont have the 7 installation disks either. is there a command prompt within XP? HELP PLEASE!!

I don't know about Compaq, but on Dell's if an OS, other than the original is installed, the recovery partition will be corrupted and it requires a manual installation using the supplied discs.

On several HP's that I've worked on recently there was a procedure to create a set of discs that could be used to reinstall if needed. That was probably the way on the Compaq and it is gone too. About your only option is to contact HP (Compaq) and see if you can get a set of discs.

Try the prompt given in the manual to trigger Recovery during bootup.

Browse the Recovery partition for the backup image file to mount and run.

Contact HP and order the recovery disks (they will have factory bloatware).

Locate a Win7 installer for your version and clean install (without bloatware) using stickered key to activate.
