Hello. :)

I was running a win7 professional OS on my Dell Optiplex 740 that was activated by a central key distribution so I do not have the installation CD and decided to install win7 ultimate ,however the new installation does not let me access the existing updates of win7, and I would like to go back to the previous installation now in windows.old.

I do have a win7 prof CD

I read the tutorial by LordBob but ( I am not that computer savvy) it does not tell me what to type when the previous installation is also win7 it does for Vista etc, in order to restore the boot sector for the previous Windows-7 installation.

I would appreciate if someone tells me what to type for a previous installation of win7 and where , if I there is someplace, is a list of all win7 updates like sp1 etc that I cannot find in the Microsoft site in order to use them on my other win7 running system

This is my first post so if I did not follow exactly any rules it was not intentional

ps I am not sure do I get an email if someone responds to my post ? or I have to periodically check?

You asked several different questions.

1. To restore from the windows.old folder, you just need to delete the existing windows namespace folders from the root. Then MOVE the windows namespace folders from windows.old onto the root.

The windows namespace folders are:
Program Files
Program Files (x86)
ProgramData
Users
Windows

Because they are both the same os:

You can leave the Documents and Settings link where it is (don't delete it ) , and You don't need to do anything about the "bootsector".

You can only do those moves from outside, i.e. using bootable media.

You can borrow my bootable media so you can see what you are doing and you don't need to use the command prompt with my media. You can rt click each folder and select MOVE to

Your other question seems to be re updating a different installation?

The easiest way is to make your installation already contains SP1. If you don't already have installation media that includes SP1, I am sure somebody can link you a copy.

Most people would then just download and run simplix update pack. It can be explained in a little more detail if and when you want to do that. It is pretty simple.

it wil lbe in your User folder. Exactly where depends what browser you are using.

E.G. firefox users would copy the Users\Your_user_name\Appdata\Roaming\mozilla folder

Brave users would copy Users\Your_user_name\AppData\Local\BraveSoftware folder
