How do I know if I have pc restore? I typed it in search and it didn't show up.

You should be able to use the Dell restoration link here, to go back to Vista:

You could just go directly to Windows 7. But I think that if you want to do that you should first MAKE SOME RECOVERY DISKS that would get you back to Vista in an emergency.

The document at the above link should tell you how to make recovery disks.

I can't in good conscience just tell you to jump right into a Windows 7 install, given your situation. Make the recovery disks first.

And then reconsider Vista versus Windows 7.

If you went back to Vista you could immediately upgrade to Windows 7 with your Windows 7 OEM disk.

I wouldn't stay with Vista.

But you should retain a way to restore to Vista IF YOU HAVE TO.

Ignat - I can't do this. I looked at the documentation and it is so complex. If I can't even do the things you are taking me through step by step, I can't do that. I am afraid I would end up with no computer. You don't know how dumb I am when I comes to this stuff. I wish I could have a nice clean computer and then I wouldn't use the registry at all. I can balance a checkbook, but I can't do this.

Nope. You would just be guessing and dig yourself a deeper hole.

You have a couple of choices:

1: Live with your current situation.

2: Educate yourself to some degree via this forum and its members.

If you can't or won't do 2, then you are stuck with 1.

Well, actually you have another choice: go back to your local tech and pay him to reinstall Windows 7 for you. But you might then just end up in the same situation 6 months later if you don't educate yourself to some degree about how to maintain a PC.

Click on the start button, then right click on the command promt icon. Select ro run as Administrator. Copy and paste sfc /scannow on the blinking line. Now, press the enter key on your keyboard.

Something in the registry may have been corrupted by the 'optimization' program you ran.

How do I find out what is good or bad to download. Isn't that all you really have to do? I have avast, malwarebytes and windows firewall and cCleaner. I thought that would be enough. I also have to stay away from optimizing the speed on my computer, right?

Not fooling around with the registry is just one minor part of a much larger issue.

Yes, don't bother "optimizing".

Avast, Malware Bytes, Windows Firewall, and CCleaner are all good applications. But they will not protect you from yourself. Downloads are hardly the only source of problems.

In your situation, I'd say you should avoid CCleaner. It is excellent but not foolproof and you might do something with it that you shouldn't. It isn't a necessity. You can do a pretty good job of "cleanup" with Windows itself.

Your PC problems are understandable given your knowledge about PC maintenance. About all you can do is read some basic articles, tutorials, or books about good PC practices---just like you would learn about anything else. Nobody on this forum was born with any PC knowledge.

OK, I will get rid of cCleaner. How do I cleanup with Windows itself. I typed it in the search box and nothing came up. Do I just go to the control panel and check things there?

If your issue with restore points hasn't yet been resolved, then follow Brink's tutorial here http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/697-system-restore-point-create.html

I would definitely un-install both of the 'optimizer' programs (and delete their folders in --> C:\ProgramFiles\) ... don't look for and/or install anymore optimizers.

If you aren't advanced enough with using your Windows operating services, it won't do you any good; but as you found out, it will cause way too many problems Good luck!

Would u believe I am having trouble with the creating a restore point? I am not seeing the same stuff. I am not getting a zip file nor am I getting the same titles on the top of the screens. After I do this, should I be able to use the restore points from here on?
What optimizer programs do I still have that I need to get rid of? Thanks.
