Solved Restore point trouble

I don’t know if this the right forum for this kind of problem but here it is: On a dual boot win 7/xp, AMD Phenom II machine I cannot create restore points at all and when I do create them manually, temporarily, they disappear on the next start up. I have followed the procedure on how to create them and when I do it manually I do get the “restore point created” sign but after a while they vanish. I checked “windows services” and I made sure that “volume shadow copy” and “windows backup” are on auto and running. On another machine again with win 7, no restore point has been created since Aug 2013. Again they are successfully created manually only to vanish after the next start up. There is plenty on disk space on both machines and the space allocated for back up more than enough. Any suggestions will be helpful.

On both PCs, check to see if the size set for system protection is what you mean was set to be large enough instead of for backups.

System restore trouble

Thank you Shawn but the problem persists The article on System Restore Points - Stop XP Dual Boot Delete (System Restore Points - Stop XP Dual Boot Delete) did not help because I lose the restore points on the win7 side and not on the xp side. Also I followed the instructions on System Protection - Change Disk Space Usage (http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/335-system-protection-change-disk-space-usage.html) but that did not help either. Is there a way to schedule a system restore point once or twice a week? I want to try that and see if it works. Harry

Did you block each OS from seeing the other one in the Stop XP tutorial?

This solution solved my problem, I went back and forth between the operating systems and the restore point I manually created on win7 stayed in place. However, and I don’t know if this a side effect, although I do see the partition where win7 resides while I am on xp, I cannot see its consent. When I click on it (drive letter D) it shows just an empty folder.

Do you have any suggestions regarding the inability to access the contents of the partition containing win7 when on xp?

You are unable to access the contents of Windows 7 while in XP since you blocked/hidden Windows 7 from XP to prevent the restore points from being removed.

Unfortunately, it's one of those trade off situations.

Thank you very much, that's what I thought too and it's ok for now. Now as far as the single boot pc I mentioned in my first post goes, I have tried increasing the size of the restore points using the article you mentioned above but it did not help.Right now for example it is set at 30 Gb which I think is plenty. Also, I see that vss and SDRSVC are running so that is not causing the problem. I have installed RollbackRxv on a trial basis and it does what it is meant to do but slows down the start up and shut down processes considerably.
Any suggestions on that?

Harry,

I'd recommend to create system images as needed instead as needed. They are much more reliable than restore points. If you like, Macrium Reflect Free is a good program to use.
