I have a similar thread started on the Windows 8 forum but no replies after two days. So here go's:

I will be receiving a new computer with Windows 8 installed. My old computer has Windows 7 Home premium installed and I will use this computer as a backup incase of problems with the new computer.
My questions are:
Will there be a possible problem if I try to restore my user files made with windows 7 to a computer with windows 8 using a disk (DVD) as my backup? If that will be a problem, what about windows easy transfer?
Needless to say, the windows help section gives no information about windows 8 and above.
And last, is it possible to have two computers operating to download and install windows updates or program updates using a wire between them both? Thank You for answering.

Windows 8 no longer has Easy Transfer (and neither does Windows 10).
You can manually restore files (i.e. copy - paste), using either a DVD or an external drive.
If you are looking for an automatic tool to do it, Zinstall have an Easy Transfer replacement, and also a more advanced one that even transfers programs.
Here's their Easy Transfer tutorial for Windows 10 and Windows 8.

Outstanding DanP,
I will order the Zinstall win win software. That solves most of the problem. But what about Window's updates. For instance: If I hook up an Ethernet or other cable to join both computers with windows 8 installed, will the download and install procedures work for both computers or do I have to do the updates separately for both? I would like to keep my old computer updated if ever the new computer develops a problem and would need to be taken out of service to be fixed, if I cannot fix the problem myself.
