Restoring my laptop to original factory state.

I have an ASUS laptop that has started running slow even tho I have run cleaners and virus scans etc. I don't have anything on there that I am concerned about losing. (Pictures, downloads etc.) I have decided I want to wipe the computer clean except for the Windows 7 operating system. I have burned a Windows 7 repair disk,. but have no other disks that came with it. I do have the product key for the OS.
How do I wipe the hard drive clean and reinstall Windows 7?

I do have a good link to a torrent of Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit addition. Which I assume I need to download and burn to disk???
From there,. what do I do to format my laptop to it's original factory state or with just the Windows 7 OS?
Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance!

Hello StarvingArtist , Welcome to the Forums , on page 12 of the manual for your computer are directions for restoring your computer. ASUSTeK Computer Inc. -Support- Drivers and Download K40IJ scroll down to manual Version E4564 use Global link.. unzip it.. by extracting all. open with adobe. and on page 12 is how to restore computer.
Let us know if you have any issues doing this.. but.. do not use a Utorrent ISO ..

I downloaded the ASUS recovery instructions as you said to,.. and after it says to enter into Windows Setup and follow the ASUS preload wizard,.. the instructions say to select a partition option and click next. 4. Select a partition option and click Next. These are the options it gives me.
Partition options:
#1 Recover Windows to first partition only.
This option deletes only the first partition and allows you to keep other partitions, and to create a new system partition as drive “C”.
#2 Recover Windows to entire HD.
This option deletes all partitions from your hard disk drive and creates a new system partition as drive “C”.
#3 Recover Windows to entire HD with 2 partition.
This option deletes all partitions from your hard drive and creates two new partitions “C” (60%) and “D” (40%).

Which one of those should I select?

Well. how many partitions do you have already ? If just whole hard drive is C .. use #2 but, you probably have 2.. so. I am thinking # 1 is what you want.

I only have one.

You have no less than three partitions.
1) Boot
2) C: Windows
3) Recovery

I would make your Recovery disks.

Disable Boot Booster in BIOS setup before you perform system recovery from USB flash disk, external optical drive or hidden partition.


1. Press <F9> during bootup.

Ensure to press <F9> only once during bootup.

2. Select the language you use and click to continue.

3. Repeat the step 1—2 in the previous section.

4. Connect a USB storage device to your Eee PC and click Backup in the Recovery System dialog box to start the recovery files backup.

The size of the connected USB storage device should be larger than 16GB.

Memory cards are not supported for this function.

A dialog box appears as a reminder if you have not connected the USB storage device for system recovery backup to your Eee PC.

5. Select a desired USB storage device if more than one USB storage device is connected to your Eee PC and click Continue.

6. All the data on the selected USB storage device will be cleared. Click Continue to start the backup or click Back to backup your important data.

You will lose all your data on the selected USB storage device. Ensure to back up your important data beforehand

7. The system backup starts and click OK when done.

The Asus factory install is one of the worst installs one can have, with poorly written crapware that interferes with better versions built into Win7 so that you'll never even get to experience Win7 native perfect performance.

These steps will help you get a superior Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7.

Then stick with the tools and methods given to keep a perfect install. Do not use Registry Cleaners except CCLeaner or any other optimizing suite except these basic step to Optimize Windows 7 - Windows 7 Forums.
