Retrieving data off old laptop hard drive

My motherboard crapped out on my HP dv6000 a week ago and so I decided it was time to upgrade. I just ordered a new dell latitude e6410 so I'm really excited!

Anyway, my dv6000 will not charge and is completely dead. I am trying to figure out the easiest and most economically sound way to get everything off my hard drive and on to my new machine.

I have done some google research and some of the methods look a bit complicated. Can anyone help me out with this? Would it be cheaper to take it to a store?

Easiest way is to put it in an external HDD enclosure and hook up to your new machine. hook-up is usually USB or e-Sata
This should be a SATA drive, but you will need to verify as its an older system.

Example: StarTech.com 2.5in Silver USB External Hard Drive Enclosure for SATA HDD Storage enclosure- Serial ATA-300

StarTech.com 2.5in eSATA USB External Hard Drive Enclosure for SATA HDD Storage enclosure- Serial ATA-300- 300 MBps <this one has the e-Sata connector which is faster than USB

you should be able to view the hard-drive and transfer the files you want.

You can also then use this drive as a backup drive by deleting everything and using it for backups and for external file storage.

Alternately, If you have a desktop computer then you can mount the drive in an extra slot and hook up the sata cable. Then put all the files on a flash drive.

I'm a bit confused, you said your mobo crapped out then you said it won't charge. I'm wondering if what you are trying to say is your battery is dead and you can't get the laptop to boot.

If this is what you mean then do the following, remove the battery and power connector, hold down the power button for 30 seconds, this will drain off residual power in the circuits. Plug the power connector back in.

If your laptop boots then I'd see if the files could be placed on a CD, or DVD if you have the writer for this, a USB stick or if neither of these is possible I'd wait until you have the new laptop. Windows 7 will download you old PC files automatically if you follow the process and if your laptop can run on power with the battery that is what I would do, if not I'd buy an external enclosure as has been already posted.

If both his laptops have wireless he won't need a cable, took just under 3 hours for 75Gb when I did mine.

If the laptop is completely dead (as you seem to indicate), the external enclosure is your best bet. Just take the HDD out (which is easy) and stick it into the enclosure. Then you can deal with it like any USB attached disk. Chances are high that win7 will find the proper driver automatically.

When I was using it a few weeks ago, it blue screened and shut off. I then noticed that the power cable wasn't charging the battery (Both the battery and charger are less than 2 months old).

I took the battery out, waited a few minutes, put it back in and I could get it to boot. It didn't have much power so I checked the systems log and there was a bunch of hardware and processor errors. I didn't have time to record them all because it ran out of power pretty quick.

I have tried using 2 different charges and I can't get it to turn on or get any power whatsoever.

I also don't have a desktop so I'll look into the star tech

Well I am officially about to pull my hair out.

I contacted HP with my hard drive part number to ask them what type of enclosure I needed to buy. I was told that my hard drive was SATA 2.5"

So I ordered the StarTEch 2.5" eSATA & USB 2.0 SATA drive enclosure. Of course, the hard drive does not fit.

I called HP back and they told me that this is simply not the case and that it should fit. Well after searching around, I still can't figure out what I need to do. Can someone please help me out? I really need to get some files off this hard drive.

Welcome to Seven Forums Your looking for an enclosure for your HP DV6000 correct? Well My HP DV6000 is an IDE and I have Used it in a cheap 2.5 IDE external enclosure. Hope this helps. Fabe

Well I figured it out. It would help to remove the plastic cover on the hard drive in order to connect the 2 pieces.

I had an hp dv9317cl mother board crap out this past week, got most of my info off since it was freezing up more and more often the past few months but still a few files I would like, as well as to use it as an extra external harddrive would be nice
I believe either one of the products you linked would work with my harddrive of my old laptop,but just double checking

I have followed all the suggestions above, my issue is with copying across data files photos etc. The folders in my old hard drive, now sat in an external caddy, cannot be accessed, Access denied, I have tried to change the security settings but they only allow me to open one file at a time and even then I cannot copy the contents. Any suggestions?

Those drive docks are well worth the money. I keep mine sitting on my desk at work, so anytime I have a drive that needs data recovered from it...it gets dropped right into the dock.
