Router Advice

Hi all hope u had a good xmas .... i got a nexus 7 2013 WiFi only for xmas and this got me thinking about my router supplied by virgin media I've had it ages "D link 802.11g/2.4 ghz model D1-524" i looked it up at D link and it has been phased out, however they still offer sum limited support for it, the unit its self is working fine well as fine as it always has but, with me adding yet another wireless devise of now many, would i be any better off with a newer router ?

Hi there .. You say it is working fine and with good speeds .. Then if it was mine i would wait till it needs replaced .. Surely Virgin would then replace it for you free of charge ..

That's very true maxie, web, Virgin Media should supply you with a free superhub at "n" speeds maybe worth giving them a call ,what package are you on with VM ?

Thanks Maxie for your response I've not noticed any decline in speed i'm on the up to 20mb plan, and im sure virgin media would replace, but seen as still working i cant really make them at the moment, so that said, and routers been relatively cheep, does anyone think id be better off with a new router, especially for newer wireless devices that could use the 802.11n wireless connectivity

I noticed on Virgins website that they are putting their speeds up in April next year with no extra charge .. As from January they do have a price rise though . So not entirely free but then again all ISP are hiking their prices up too... If that did apply to you maybe you would be better of with a new router

with out going to far off subject its the none used telephone line rental for existing customers that really gripes me lol, so ok my first port of call will be to see if i can get anything from virgin media, but if that fails, are my only options something d link ?

They are now using Netgear VMDG480 choose what ever you like

the VMDG480 router isn't very good from my research, has poor reviews, also the new super hub 2, isn't much better with no USB printer etc support, so after looking around i'm sorta leaning towards the TP-Link WDR4300 about £60 at this time .......... anyone herd horror stories about this? router or want to add a recomendation
