Nobody is telling you that you have to use a router. What people are telling you is that there are benefits to running one. Having more than one computer means you need to use a router ( there are ways around this but it isn't worth the effort) but the benefits are available to you if you use one with only one computer as most are firewall/routers these days and they can be had for very little money which is a small price to pay for the added security.

Man... I configured MSN dialup for a client night before last. 22400 dialup connection speed. I am glad I can't remember those days!
