Hi - I thought this was a similar problem to the one I have. I have a Dell Inspiron Intel i5 with a 460Gb disk. The HDD is partitioned into RECOVERY, C:, D: and OEM. Drive C: is 59Gb and has 3.5Gb left free. Drive D: has tons of space left. My intention was to shrink D: by 145Gb and then expand C: by 145Gb to prevent running out of space. But having shrunk the D: drive, I do not get the option to expand C:. Am I trying to do something I cant actually do?

Welcome to Windows Seven Forums.

In future, would you please create a new thread for a new problem, as it is considered bad manners to hijack an existing thread, and is frowned on by the Mods. :)

You cannot expand the primary drive C because of your logical drive D, which is in fact part of your extended C drive.

To extend your C drive you will need to delete the logical drive D, which will then allow to you to extend C by the full amount of resultant free space.

Beware of trying to create a fourth primary partition because you then run the risk of converting your drive to a dynamic drive, which could render your system unbootable.

Extending my C: drive

Hi Seavixen - apologies for "hijacking" the thread - its my first post. I have succeeded in freeing up the space previously occupied by the d drive. But when I try to extend the C drive (right click on the logical drive c) the option to extend is greyed out.

Your C drive is a primary partition, not a logical one.

Your Free Space partition is a partition that has not been formatted so try a right-click on this partition and choosing Delete.

This should convert the space to unallocated drive space so you should then be able to right-click your C drive and choose Extend.

Pleased to hear it.

The aircraft is a restored de Havilland Sea Vixen with an all-up weight of 19 tons - a big beast when it was embarked in an aircraft carrier.
