running Win7 and discs not being recognized drive is shown

I thought I had mentioned I do have an external USB drive. I wonder how much space is required for the backup. How would I accomplish this with an external drive. Also I am running Webshots would this be affected by running the system checker link.

I have never used webshots but as all your photos are stored online as opposed to on your PC it should not be a problem.

There is no set size for a backup, but as you go through setting the back up, up, it will be shown to you for your PC. (see the tutorial)

I am unclear how I should proceed as I can not address the cable being possible not fitted or fastened correctly. I have not moved my pc at all so I am curious why the cable could have gotten loose. So I guess it will have to wait until the hectic status of the renovations around here subsides.

There is most probably nothing wrong with your cable but because we cannot check these things ourselves we have to ask. All these checks will enable us then to say what the fault is and enable us to tell you exactly what to do to repair the fault. At the moment I believe that the drive itself is faulty, the only way to be sure tho would be to try it out in another PC or to try another drive in your PC and see if it works.

Did you get a result with sfc /scannow ?

I am printing out the instructions for running sfc /scannow. It looks a bit confusing to me but I will try it in a couple hours. I can not do it now as there is too much stuff going on here just now. Yes indeed I am learning something else today about my computer! Any way that there is a really simplified list of instructions? Stop laughing, while I do know some things there are some I have yet to learn.

As always take your time the sfc /scannow tutorial may look confusing, just do it line for line. I am sure you will manage. It is certainly a lot better written and simpler than anything I could do lol, and no I wouldn't dream of laughing tbh I like the get up and go that you have and the determination to see this through.

bobsscgirl, when you get time and you feel like doing it We would like you to try putting a different CD/DVD drive in the PC ,if you know anyboby you could borrow one off just for testing purposes , But I'm afraid I agree with pooch I think you have lost your drive , Cables can and do degrade over time you do not have to touch them for them to fail ,so it is always worth taking the time just to check

My husband is going to love this. It will definitely get me an I told you so. He has said the drive is probably the culprit. This is what you might call a divided household, which is to say Bob runs Linux and I run Windows. He used to use Windows but for quite a few years has gone to Linux and as a result he has lost touch (on purpose) with Windows. As I said I run Windows and intend to stay with it. I have been with it since early '98 and as stated it is an ongoing learning experience. One that I enjoy, most of the time. I know when the chaos here subsides a bit he might just help me check out the drive. He is determined to have little to do with Windows but he does support me so I am betting I can swing an assist from him.

Good for you. My hubby is a dyed in the wool Linux fan and believe he knows all. Just ask him (you don't gave to even ask) he will tell you. I crack up when not too soon after he has preached his love of this or that Linux feature he had some major problems.
Not to demean his gender but he knows all and can't be convinced otherwise most of the time.

If I am understanding this correctly since my pc thus far is starting Windows normally then this would not be appropriate for me????

You are understanding what you read, but it will also work for you, that your computer is working will make no difference to the end result and it will still work afterwards

I have just read all 50+ posts here again. I am confused (as Always). Is this a Desktop PC or a laptop that we are dealing with, that has a problem CD/DVD ?

Following this is a copy of my original post. The only thing not stated is that my pc is a desktop.

My E drive aka my cd / dvd drive is not recognizing any discs, that includes blanks, store bought artist ones etc. Yes it sees all drives including the new external drive I got. When I boot up PC pops up with a balloon msg saying files waiting to be burned. I have no such request pending. When I try to find them x2 opens to my c drive. No files there I want or should delete. I click on the cd drive and I get a msg that says please put a disc in drive. Btw some of the time there has been either a blank disc in drive or a store bought artist cd. I tried 2 different restore points and each comes up with some msg about something may be corrupted and contact my administrator (me, I guess?). Windows Media Center no longer appears on my pc. I was on the Microsoft site and tried to update it and it says it can't something about software restriction and contact my administrator???? I am not sure if it is related to no disc recognize problem. One more thing the sound is working fine.
An update on the noted comments about Windows Media Player 12 is that I tried to find a exe for it or even 11. I did find it for 11 but it would not install it said already had a newer version on my pc. I just haven't looked in the right place. I don't know if one issue has any bearing on the other but you never know. I have learned a lot since I have been online since early '98 and I do know it is most definitely an ongoing learning experience.
