Solved s3 sleep mode...

Hi, im having trouble with s3 sleep mode. Windows will go to sleep on either the first or second manual attempt. However it will not come out of sleep when bittorrent is running prior to putting the computer to sleep. If bittorrent isnt running the comp may come out of standby but sometimes doesn't. If it doesn't I have to unpower the power supply then plug it back in. Then the computer starts up and says "windows is resuming". Here's a couple of things that I have tried already:

graphics card has latest driver.
bios has latest firmware.
bios is set for s3 sleep.

Any help on this issue would be greatly appreciated.

Hi,

Are you able to run powercfg -energy from an elevated command prompt? If so, then please do that and then browse to C:\Windows\system32\energy-report.html.

Open the HTML and copy the contents and paste it here so we can have a look at this for you.

Hi,

Thanks for posting that. Can you try the following, and post back the output?

In an elevated command prompt, please do this:

powercfg -h OFF ,and hit enter and then
powercfg -h ON, and hit enter.

This will turn off the hibernate function, and then turn it back on again. I'm hoping this "reset" will solve the problem. If not, we can call in the "big guns" on this.

I ran those two commands and it seemed to have worked. Comp came back from standby even with bittorent running which has seemed to be the root of the issue. I will monitor this over the next day or so and see if it appears corrected. Thanks Golden for your expertise. - Mike.

ok now the comp. will go into s3 sleep manually and i can get it out with no prob. However I have power mgt in windows set to put the comp. to sleep in 30 mins. but i left the comp. on last night and it was still on when I got up. It failed to enter sleep mode. Any ideas on this issue Golden?

We need to see if any Kernel-Power events are being logged - it sounds like a driver or service issue, but it'd be interesting/nice to see if the event log is logging anything.

ok, im not that computer savvy, if you explain to me how to post the event logs i will do so. Also one relevant comment to make is that I have wake timers set to enable in power management and id rather not disable them because I want virus, spyware scans, etc. to be able to wake the comp. to perform maintenance. But like i said earlier it doesn't seem like the computer is ever automatically going into standby on its own.

I'm looking in event viewer and am not really sure where i should be looking for these errors. If you can tell me how I will post the event log on here.

Open up eventvwr.msc, right-click the "System" log (under Windows Logs), and use the "Save all events as" to save the log file as an .evtx file. This file can then be uploaded somewhere and linked here for analysis.

I was looking at last night, and your system (for many hours) attempts to sleep (and actually does), but within a minute or two keeps getting woken up by the Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller device, and "Power Button". So, unless you're also waking it at night, it's probably your network card driver.

should i just re install the network card driver? I don't want to disable wake on lan as i plan on using that in the near future.

Well, if you have it set to wake on LAN, it will "wake" :). It couldn't hurt to update to a new driver, but I can't guarantee that it will resolve anything. It's worth making sure you've got the latest versions, though. If you don't currently need it to be able to wake the machine, you can modify it's ability to do so as well:

Ok, well some updates. I re installed the nic card and modified the nic card wake on lan setting to only wake on a magic packet. Also I changed a setting in power options to allow computer to sleep when sharing media. However computer still failed to go to sleep when I left it on overnight. Is there anything else I can do. I had s3 sleep/hibernate working well a few months ago but had to format the comp. and now it doesn't work at all.

I have resolved this issue and will mark it as solved. There is an option in bittorent that prevents the computer from entering sleep mode when there are active torrents. Computer now sleeps automatically per the settings I have configured for it. It also appears not to freeze upon waking as it did before. Thanks everyone for you help.
