Just finished building my first computer and am at the point where it's time to load windows. i pop in the DVD, select the language, hit start install and I get a message saying

"a required cd/dvd drive device is missing. if you have a driver floppy disk, cd, dvd, or usb flash drive, please insert it now." then some line about how its ok to remove the install disk.

all connections are good, obviously since it started to do the first couple of steps. Now i'm stuck at this point and not sure how to resolve it.

Here is the drive that I have installed: Newegg.com - SAMSUNG DVD Burner 24X DVD+R 8X DVD+RW 8X DVD+R DL 24X DVD-R 6X DVD-RW 16X DVD-ROM 48X CD-R 24X CD-RW 48X CD-ROM SATA Model SH-224BB - CD / DVD Burners.

thanks in advance

Please fill in your system specs to help us help you

Have a look at this
http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/1649-clean-install-windows-7-a.html

If i were you may be easier to install from flash drive (assuming you have one)
http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/31541-windows-7-usb-dvd-download-tool.html
Download tool, install, burn windows iso to drive, reboot from usb away you go

As soon as windows is installed it will install any required drivers for your cd drive so wont be an issue

** Specs updated**

on the first link, i get to the point between slides 4-5 when i get that message.

have not tried, didnt know how/where to get the data transfered to boot from a USB. will certainly try soon. not sure if i have a USB that has that much space available.

4GB pen drive should be sufficient, if you havent got one you should be able to install as you are doing but i have only seen installer ask for drivers when installing to raid drive or similar not sata optical drive i thought they just worked.

Any probs post back :)

Hi kcunha,

You have mentioned RAID 1 in your system specs.

Are you following the correct procedure in setting up the raid configuration and installing the OS in that raid configuration as outlined in your motherboard manual?

i am fairly sure. i'll go over it again just to be certain. the logical drive is set up and running fine. SATA leads are in the specified ports. will have to reread on OS config.

going back to step 0, where do i get the .iso file to burn? the only other computer i have is running vista. can i just put the windows 7 dvd in that computers drive and select the files there? the vista system is only a 32 bit system. this a problem?

edit. might have figured it out. put the dvd in the bay of the vista computer. stopped autoplay feature. copy and paste files from dvd to flash drive. can i use this?

i used imgburn to get the iso. but i only have a 32 bit system to do it on. so now bootsect.exe isnt on the drive. so then i went ahead and tried to install with the disk and usb both connected. it let me get past that screen but then it didnt recognize and disks. i feel like this is way more difficult than it needs to be.

It does not matter whether you created the ISO of your install Disk on a 32 bit machine. ISO by definition is an exact image of the disk.

I do not know which program you used to create the bootable pendrive.

For Windows to recognise your raid setup during the installation, you have to inject the RAID drivers. Are you doing it?

( I am not a RAID expert but if you go through the manual diligently it shouldn't be difficult. Everything on installing the OS on raid including when and how to inject the raid drivers is mentioned there. That apart, I do not understand why you should go for RAID 1. You can always backup your OS and data on an external drive. The external drive, switched on only when necesaary will definitely work longer than your internal drive which will be spinning always.)

You are loading a 64bit operating system from what I can tell.

Go back to your manual.

Find out the maker of your onboard Sata chipset
(eg >Promise< or >Silicon Image< for instance)
Go to respective maker website and download latest 64Bit RAID (not basic) Win 7 driver.
Unpack/unzip the drivers to a dos formatted usb stick.

Stick the usb stick in a port and your raid drivers should auto-load if you are lucky as you restart the Win 7 64bit dvd.

Good it dawned on you finally.:)

Please mark the thread as solved.

And, always, always read through the manual ( be it any product) atleast once from the first page to last page.
