Samsung Releasing 2TB SSDs!

Apparently without fanfare, Samsung is releasing both 2TB EVOs and 2TB Pros. The EVO is supposed to be available 7/22/2015. Newegg is already accepting preorders for it for $800. Newegg also lists the Pro but hasn't announced a release date or price and isn't taking preorders yet.

While the price is still too steep for this old lady's blood (and budget!), it's a trend I find very encouraging. 500GB EVOs are already available on sale from time to time for almost half of what I paid for my first one two or three years ago. 4TB SSDs are available for consumer sale already (albeit at gut wrenching prices) and I saw a 6TB SSD being announced in a magazine recently. I was skeptical when an Intel official predicted earlier this year that we would be seeing 10TB SSDs within two years but, now, I'm not so skeptical. We may even see 10TB broached before the end of the year.

Thanks for that link! It's exciting to see SSD capacity and speeds finally taking off. Sadly, the 4TB SSD just announced is SAS instead of SATA and is intended for a 90% read, 10% write workload (although the 90%-10% workload would be good for static data storage that only gets read, such as videos). SATA speeds have been saturated with AHCI although NVMe is able to boost that, as does PCIe (although the number of lanes for PCIe are still limited). But even the limited speeds AHCI offers would be more than fast enough for storage and is available on all current MOBOs. Hopefully, a SATA 4TB SSD won't be far behind.

I still don't know why someone doesn't use existing technology to make larger capacity SSDs in a 3.5" form factor. Present hardware (computers and servers) would be able to accept them without modification or adapters. Those SSDs would also require less cooling than HDDs meaning data centers could be located in warmer climates closer to their clients.

SanDisk makes excellent products but I won't buy them because of the way they weaseled out of honoring a warranty claim several years ago.

Yep I got admit I don't like the fiddly little trays one has to use to fit the 2.5 to desktops - I bought a few some time back only to fid the fixing holes didn't match up with either the drive or those wretched clip in slide / holders.

I have never had any problems with SanDisk though I have with Asus - support in particular because I don't think the right hand knows what the left one is doing. I had five months of grief trying to get the proper NVidia driver for a laptop and after finding just by sheer luck the service centre in Sydney the problem was sorted in less than an hour. All in all support for products in general is pretty thin on the ground in my opinion - take your money and then just move on to the next mug.
