I really hate the corporate culture at Intel....

I'm glad, at least AMD isn't alone in the fail. Actually this is a bigger failure for Intel because much more is expected of them compared to AMD. LOL

Always been a fan of AMD, they just seem like a more geek friendly, down to earth company.

I wouldn't call it a fail by any means.

Its just not really targeted at gamers or mainstream.

But, for those who work alot with heavily threaded applications, and can truly make use of all that RAM & the 6cores/12threads, its a huge win.
Theres simply no processor out there that can keep up.

But for 95% of us, its hard to justify the price for most activities and gaming, as there not that much difference there.

Agree, not really sure who Intel is targeting. Though the chip is impressive, as you say, 95 percent of us don't need it, especially since the i7-2600K is still around for a 3rd of the price of the i7-3960X.

And they didn't spend a year and half building it up like AMD did with the Bulldozer. Now that was a bust. Early info had me nearly ready to go AMD. NOT!

The series is designed to follow on the aged (as processors go) i7-970, 980 and 990 hex cores. Those weren't for mainstream PCs either. And at 6.4 GT/s, they aren't slouches.

I agree. They kept to themselfs. I wish the new $1000 Intel chip was a little better. In most tests that I have seen it only gave 1 more frame a second in games then the I7 2600K. I am not sure where these new chips fit in since it is on the level of a server and companies such as the one I work for just dump intense simulation onto the servers.

I don't think any of the hex cores are targeting gamers. I doubt the game software can even make use of them. These CPUs are for workstations. I think the primary audience is CAD. (Mechanical and Architectural)

Or the extreme enthusiasts who just have to have one just to say they have one. (I'd get one, if I could afford it )

Anyway as a gamer I can't say I've pushed my i7-950 system to it's limits. Yeah the GPU may be pushed, but the CPU certainly hasn't.

For a 6 core chip they should test dual-boxing. But even then, as most games put 90% of the work into a single thread anyway...

I may just drop in a 970. Less hassle than an all new build. Like to see another price drop though.

BTW I bought my 950 at Micro Center earlier this year, a few months later they started selling the 960 for the same price... $229

Oh well, lets hope that 970 drastically drops in price

Agreed on the price being a little much; maybe with the new CPUs coming out we'll get that price drop we're looking for.

With tech prices it's always a little guessing game isn't it whether to buy or wait? Sometimes you just can't hold those horses.

I buy a lot of my stuff at Micro Center here in Michigan as well. I like to get the board and CPU locally if I can just in case something is not right. Plus I got the 920 for $199 when online prices were still close to $300.

Yeah I actually bought my motherboard, RAM, and a 930 for $199 at Micro Center as well. Then they had a price drop on the 950 so I jumped on it.

Funny thing is that when the i7 systems first hit I was all set to get one with a i7-950 for about $550 until Amazon botched my order. After that I put the system on hold until about a year or so later when I decided to revisit the system build and wound up getting a 930, and then later upgrading to the 950 for $229.

Looking back on it now Amazon's screw up was my savings

This isn't a fail. The performance is there and in most case, better than the i7 9xx line and the memory optimization is very impressive. However like some said before me, what will your game gain of your 2 extra cores if your games only supports 4? It's like your having a 4 core CPU beng compared with the 4-cores middle-ground CPUs... off course there won't be a huge difference. Now, I can only name one software of top of my mind that will actually care of all those cores... yeah.

If the software doesn't limit the CPU, the GPUs will.

Hey gamers - spare a thought for us Cinema 4D users. C4D eats cores for breakfast.

In my little render farm I have 2600K + i7-930 + 2 quad cores = 24 threads

so this new 6C/12T cpu looks good to me. Softpedia did a Cinebench test and the new cpu scored 12.3 (my 2600K @ 4.6GHz scores 8.9)

I know what I want for Xmas !

lol, the same thing happened when I got my 920, but it was only a few weeks before the 930 was released. Ah, well.
