Hi...new to posting on windows forum...

I seem to have the same problem many others have had -- namely, installing the Radeon HD 4650 card with Windows 7 on an older motherboard. I have tried absolutely everything I can think of, short of wiping the drive of Windows 7 and buying a copy of XP off of Ebay.

I have installed the drivers from the disk, tried every version of AMD/ATI driver from 10.2 through 12.4, used Driver Sweeper in Safe Mode to clear drivers, tried installing with Update Drivers from Manager using Have Disk and pointing to the older 10.12 file on the hard drive...I am at wits end.

I have tried dj_molecular 06-23-2011 at 08:53:09 PM solution to no avail (last post):
HD4650 agp drivers won't install - Graphics-Cards - Graphic-Displays

I have also tried the 12.4 AGP hotfix at: AMD Catalyst

My specs:

D845PEBT2 Intel Motherboard with 845 chipset
P4 2.4
2 gigs ram
70 gig harddrive
Antec 500w power supply
Sapphire Radeon HD 4650 AGP 1gb memory

Any help would be much appreciated

It isn't the card that is the problem but the ancient motherboard you are trying to run it on. AGP video cards require an AGP driver which is part of the chipset (and not part of the video card driver) to install and function properly, and that old 845 chipset has little to no native support in Windows 7 (it hasn't seen an update from Intel in 8 years).

It may work if you can get the last XP chipset driver for it,

to install. It will likely take compatibility mode,

to get it to install. If it does, then install the video card driver and it should work.

Hi Stormy13,

Just wanted to say thanks...that helped a lot...not just the link to the XP drivers but the explanation as well as the suggestion of using compatibility mode. I was worried the motherboard was just too old for windows 7...now I understand why.

Anyway, after another day of wrangling, I finally got the drivers to load. I ended up installing the 12.4 XP hotfix from AMD and installed that under compatibility mode for XP3 as well. ...and it took. I was dumbfounded. I did have one screen freeze since then, but it seems to be working. fingers crossed.

Thanks again,
Scott
