Solved SATA DVD Drive

I have always had IDE DVD drives. This weekend I got a SATA DVD drive. Tonight I burned a DVD for the first time. The drive made this high pitched sound. It would come and go as the disk burned. The disk burned OK. Is the high pitched sound something that is part of a SATA drive or have I got a problem with mine? Thanks,

I have both an IDE DVD R/W and a SATA DVD R/W in my PC and haven't noticed any difference in the noise level when burning CDs or DVDs in either of them. Both of my DVD drives are HPs, so it may be different with your model.

I have a dvd, cd and blueray and none of them make noises when used for anything. Going by that the noise is not normal IMO.

I have, installed across 8 computers, 5 DVD drives, and 4 Blu-ray drives.

I have found that the cheaper the drive the more noise it produces. The LiteON drives produce more noise than the LG which in turn produces more noise than the Pioneers.

I've also noticed, that when there are problems reading disks (such as dirty ones), the drives have a tendency to make a little more noise.

But that may be just my experience.

My built in DVD/CD combo drive only makes loud, stuttery, whiny noises when first seeking a newly inserted disk...

These noises eventually dissolve into a steady purr/hum once the disc is detected in Windows...

Since I posted my message, I burned another disk. Everything went fine. I guess I was just a bit "panicy". Thanks for all of your comments.

The noise could be due to one of two things. Either a bad disc, or off-centered....or the drive itself isn't securely fastened into your case. Given that a later disc worked fine, I am going with the disc suggestion. Occasionally, you'll come across a disc that isn't manufacturered 100% correct.

Thanks for the suggestion. I will check to see if the drive has a screw in the bay.
