"Scan with Microsoft Security Essentials" - Add or Remove Context Menu

How to Add or Remove "Scan with Microsoft Security Essentials" from Context Menu in Windows

   Information
When you have Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE) installed, it adds "Scan with Microsoft Security Essentials" to the context menu of files, folders, and drives by default to make it easier to scan them on demand.

This tutorial will show you how to add or remove "Scan with Microsoft Security Essentials" from the context menu of all users in XP (SP3), Vista, and Windows 7.

You must be logged in as an administrator to be able to do the steps in this tutorial.

   Note

  • You cannot install Microsoft Security Essentials in Windows 8 since the default Windows Defender in Windows 8 is the new Microsoft Security Essentials and used instead. This tutorial will not work in Windows 8.
  • Even if you removed "Scan with Microsoft Security Essentials" context meu item, Microsoft Security Essentials progam updates may add it back. If it does, you'll just need to remove it again.

Scan with Microsoft Security Essentials"

I just noticed it today but I know it was here last week. I never updated anything other than virus definitions. I did however shut of automatic windows update last week too. Maybe there is a connection but that seems unlikely. Bottom line I don't like the reg hack because it use a freakin DOS screen. Why? It was part of the MSE suit. It needs to come back please IMHO.

Also, I just uninstalled MSE and reinstalled from MS website and the right click context menu came back. Of course I don't have that the KB installed wither.

The "Scan" item in the context menu keeps on appearing when I disinstall and reinstall MSE, but then there is probably always an update that makes it disappear. I made a backup copy of registry entries when the item was present in the menu. The contents of MSE related keys are exactly the same as the ones in the .reg file suggested at the beginning of this forum. When the item is not present in the context menu though, the keys are still in the registry, and they are the same, so there must be something else preventing the MSE item to show up in the menu.

I'm not sure unless one of those may be causing it.
