Schools Agreement upgrade disk

Try again

I'm trying to install...again. I've removed all RAM except one 2GB module - running Memtest86+ produced no errors but I removed the extra RAM anyway.

I'm using the command "create partition primary" is it ok that there isn't another partition for the swap space? Is there a specific command for swap space like "create partition swap"...(stop laughing) or is it not necessary?

Oh, I phoned Microsoft. They said the disk is made not to boot...why? and that they were busy with a new schools agreement so they couldn't be of too much help until middle of October.

You can create more than one partition but you have to set the size of the first one you create to leave room to create a secondary partition. By default it will use all the available space. I haven't done it from a command prompt for a while so I don't remember exactly what the screen prompts look like, but I have done it in the past.
The DVDs not being bootable is likely by design. I would say its to force you to run the install from windows. It's an "upgrade" version right? There's a reason why it's cheaper than the full version. Don't get me wrong, I'm not pointing fingers or making a judgment. It just seems to me that, that might be something Microsoft would do to prevent you from getting around having another OS already installed. If you have to install another OS try doing a custom install, aside from the windows.old folder being left behind its as good as doing a clean install.

Don't try your Product Key at first, uncheck box to activate when connected to internet. Instead do one of the workarounds given here to install to cleaned HD:

Clean Install with a Upgrade Windows 7 Version

Greg already posted the link.

Here's how to enter the command to create a specific size partition.

create partition primary size=102400 <enter>

1024MB = 1GB - 1024x100 = 102400, you can use/create any size you like.

Removing RAM works.

Thanks everybody

It seems to be finally working. For whatever reason I could only install with one stick of RAM though Memtest86+ never picked up any problems. I'm running memtest again to be sure. A couple things I will be writing to Microsoft about

1. While it may be an upgrade disk, including the option to actually format the drive within windows like every other upgrade disk on the planet might have been an idea. This disk simply does not give you any option to format.

2. Since you can't format from within windows(even using custom install) allowing a user to boot with the disk is essential and removing that functionality is foolish - This volume license requires either a KMS server or you can use the MAK key but then you need to license each PC by telephone using the machine ID which already does something to discourage would-be pirates.

To sum up:
Thanks to everybody for the input and guides.

What I was taught:
Volume License Upgrade disks (Win 7) are a bit of a pain (at least where I live)
How to create a bootable Win7 / Vista disk
How to format a hard disk using a command prompt
Error code: 0x80070570 was resolved by removing all but 1 module of RAM (could be faulty will test again)

If I get stuck again (as I have a few more PC's to do) I'll post back here because this forum is very helpful.

It could be faulty DIMM slots, did you test those individually also?

Just curious, where/what country do you live in?

I'll test the DIMM slots as well - good point

I live in South Africa where the food, weather, wildlife and countryside is awesome but where anything resembling technology is damn expensive not to mention our ridiculous Internet prices which are among the most expensive in the world.

Other than that the place is great...We have a president who didn't finish high school, was accused of bribery and fraud and was accused of rape yet somehow he's still our president...

Apartheid government=crap
New government=even worse!

That said, it's actually a great place despite the other nonsense.

That may explain the version you received as you said earlier, to combat piracy.
