Hi all
What's up with modern TV -- I'm heartily sick of seeing stuff showing obviously stupid dysfunctional people screaming and yelling at Airline Staff because they've forgotten their passports or lame excuses made by drunk drivers when stopped by CHP or others for being obviously DUI on a Los Angeles Freeway etc.

What happened to some really good sci fi shows --Stargate Atlantis was excellent only to be replaced by the excruciatingly horrible Stargate Universe -- now finally put out of its misery --no season 3 thank goodness.

Terra Nova has the makings of a decent show but no decision has been made on a series 2 as of yet.

One of my all time favourites was an old series -- THE INVADERS -- still very watchable after all this time if you can download a few episodes from the Internet. Roy Thinnes was the lead actor and is BRILLIANT.

A few more months of the current TV schedules then I'm chucking the whole TV out into the bin.

I'm sure the advertisers can't like the current situation either.

C'mon guys -- there must be plenty of people who can write decent Sci Fi --and we have enough new gadgets these days to make the whole concept really interesting again.

So NETWORKS

PLEASE LESS REALITY SHOWS AND MORE GOOD SCI FI.

cheers
jimbo

There's only 3 or 4 decent shows that I like right now. I saw four adverts, all in the one ad break, Jersey Shore - Geordie Shore - Desperate Scousewives and The Only Way is Essex. I hate reality TV.

You didn't like Stargate Universe?

Actually, it was shaping up to be quite a good series in it's own right.

I'm sure the advertisers can't like the current situation either.

You're kidding right? They LOVE it. Not only do these reality shows bring in the higher ratings, some of these shows are little more than one big product placement.

I have netflix and have started to watch a lot of older shows that I've never seen or would like to see again.
Doctor Who (old and new)
Mission Impossible (60's version, which is streamed in HD and looks incredible for a 40 year old tv show)
Battlestar Galactica (old and new)
Caprica

there are a lot of older sci-fi shows on Netflix but seeing as you are in Iceland you'd need to use a VPN or a Proxy and I am not sure how fast the connections are through those.

Science fiction died with the cancellation of Stargate Universe, and a few months later Caprica.

SGU is a far cry from SG:A or the original SG. I can understand how the folks who enjoyed those two shows would find SGU an "excruciating" experience.

Caprica was shaping up to be an extraordinary series, however SyFy killed the show with the lack of advertising. If more casual viewers had been made aware of setting, I think it would have survived given the huge numbers the remake of BSG received.

Down with reality shows...this is why I stopped paying for cable a while ago. No reason for me to watch live TV anymore. I can buy/stream pretty much any show or movie, and I'm already paying for cable net.

Hi there
No prob at all getting the older shows -- loved as I said in my post "The Invaders".

No problems also with connection speeds --we have broadband speeds most people would DIE for and no capping either - so perfectly possible to watch HD streams on large plasma / lcd tv's direct from the Internet.

There's a site in macedonia where this stuff is available from quite freely too -- but you'll have to google for it.

I've got Battlestar Gaactica (the original series and the special Battlestar galactica 1980 stuff too).

The original Star trek was fine and still going strong. I actually liked Star trek Enterprise too but they didn't give it a sensible run to get established.

You can even find some of the old BBC classics like "Out of the Unknown" etc etc.

The older script writers certainly knew their stuff.

Most modern production shows I find too full of special effects and loud music -- while the dialog (when people can actually use words of more than one syllable) is far too soft to hear -- reason why I don't go to the cinema any more --used to love it BTW.

Maybe TV has passed it's sell by date an entertainment medium. I think the studios need seriously to look again at their current output -- apart from sport it's mainly a whole load of rubbish.

I've even found some old classic Radio Sci Fi series both from the UK and US (NPR old series) which I put on to an ipod -- great to listen to instead of the modern mind numbing thump thump "music" that loads of people seem to want to have these days.

Warehouse is a rare exception -- quite a good series but its next season is still not a certainty.

Cheers
jimbo

I think the writing was on the wall when the SCI-FI channel became the SY-FY channel. They can put stuff on now that isn't Sci-Fi. == I know what you mean about garbage on TV. A couple weeks ago we got a free weekend of HBO and Cinemax. They had movies on there from 20 years ago. I guess people pay for that stuff, but why bother. == I wish they would bring back some of the series from 20 year ago or so. I enjoyed "Sliders" and the "X-Files". I guess the Reality Shows are cheap to make and people watch them like crazy. I just wonder how long they can go on though. I watch "Survivor", but it is pretty much the same thing each time. == There were some good sit-coms on that they just don't seem to bring back. Ali McBeal was really good. I guess there must be a reason why it isn't on.

Good ole' Siffy where ratings trump content and if the show hasn't achieved successful ratings by the end of the first season, see ya!

I guess the Reality Shows are cheap to make and people watch them like crazy.

That's why networks love them and they're so damn prolific. Far cheaper to produce than scripted productions.

I just wonder how long they can go on though.

They'll go on as long they keep bringing in the $$$.

Hi there
Even the "Scrobbits" addicted to TV 24 hrs a day are getting fed up with "Reality Shows" so the $$$'s won't be appearing indefinitely.

One good side effct from the sheer hideousness of modern TV is that "Old Fashioned Steam Radio" is back in vogue -- BBC R4 often has really FANTASTIC output -- and people are learning to read books again -- or at least get them via Audio books.

We used to have a free TV day in Iceland -- On Thursdays no TV used to be transmitted -- and this was great --people would actually go out and SPEAK to each other.

Can't agree with the conclusion of this but here's the evidence. !!!

http://www.funtrivia.com/askft/Question21710.html

This type of restriction has long since gone out of the window with cable and satellite TV but I think as more and more people are getting disillusioned by what the Networks are offering there's hope for us all as people abandon the medium altogether.

However if you are a young budding author you could potentially make a LOT OF MONEY by writing scripts that people would really enjoy -- and as SCI FI fans are really starved of material these days you could perhaps be the next "Bill Gates" !!.

Cheers
jimbo

Yeah, we have hundreds of TV channels and usually nothing good. News arent even good these days and half the time they tell me useless stuff.
If no good new series come up and get released netflix and a few other media companies will be in trouble. There is just no way i will pay money to watch some crap reality tv show.

I recommend The River. it's not a sci-fi but it's a nice interesting show.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_River_(U.S._TV_series)
So far they planned out 8 episodes for season 1

When I moved back to the US in 1991, there was 2 or 3 channels in Iceland.
1 free over the air (technically not free since you paid a tax for it) and 1 or 2 paid channel requiring a box.
Are there more channels there now? some of my friends had satellite, which I think was called Sky.

When did they have no TV Thursdays?

When I moved back to the US in 1991, there was 2 or 3 channels in Iceland.
1 free over the air (technically not free since you paid a tax for it) and 1 or 2 paid channel requiring a box.
Are there more channels there now? some of my friends had satellite, which I think was called Sky.

When did they have no TV Thursdays?

Hi there:

Answer :

Why is there no t.v. programs scheduled in Iceland on thursdays ?

Satellite TV is available in most of the country -- so is Cable -- remember though at the Artic Circle Satellite TV becomes impossible -- which is probably why Internet TV streaming is popular - Broadband speeds are fine.

So far they planned out 8 episodes for season 1

I watched the 2-hour premiere, but it seemed just too strange for me. I can see it being a show like "Lost".

We used to have a free TV day in Iceland -- On Thursdays no TV used to be transmitted -- and this was great --people would actually go out and SPEAK to each other.
