SCI FI FANS -- WHERE ARE THE SERIES I'm REALLY TIRED of reality shows

I've just found (can't say where !!) a new episode of THE TIME TUNNEL which was a Pilot to renew the series circa 2002. This was EXCELLENT so I can't understand why they never actually made the new series -- Who needs Hideous Reality TV and as for things like Big Brother that ran for 5 or 6 years I just don't have the vocabulary to express how bad that show was (and they are STILL thinking of making another series). A few decent shows like that lost Pilot episode of The Time Tunnel would be really great.

Incidentally although a bit cheesy the original Time Tunnel series circa 1966 was a lot of fun too -- busy also acquiring it from "an unamed source". - I'd buy these if one could get DVD's but there just don't seem to be any to be had!! -- Even if the networks can't produce good stuff these days they could still make money by selling DVD's of the older stuff.

(However a problem might be that people would say --look if they could make GREAT TV nearly 50 years ago why can't they do it TODAY!!).

Good question...where has all the good Sci-Fi gone on TV.

At the box office, other than the next Star Trek movie coming up and the Star Wars franchise trying to capitalize on 3-D, the space-based genre doesn't offer much. The super-hero genre seems to be popular, but has a lot of re-makes. With a re-vamping of Batman, Superman and now Spider-man, Hollywood seems to be running out of ideas. The X-Men series has possibilities, but I'm not sure if they have anything in the works. Going by the following list and links, Sci-Fi needs some new life.

5 X-Men movies
6 Star Wars movies, 1 Animated Star Wars movie
5 Superman movies, 1 Supergirl movie.
3 Spider-man movies, 1 on the way
4 Terminator movies
4 Alien movies, 2 Alien vs. Predator movies
4 Predator movies, 2 Alien vs. Predator movies
6 Batman movies, 1 on the way
11 Star Trek movies, 1 on the way
3 The Matrix movies
3 Transformer movies
Etc., Etc.

The following site lists the upcoming movies as Sci-Fi, fantasy and horror. If you subtract the fantasy and horror films, The Sci-Fi list is small.

Makes very DEPRESSING reading

a lot of these are designed for young and sub teens -- when we were at that sort of age we read the comics as there wasn't much TV around (actually loads of older people still read the comics too !!).

I really can't understand why someone can't come up with some good watchable sci-fi

For instance a lot of the ideas expressed in the film Forbidden Planet could be interesting.

What about for instance the problems of finding traces of a lost civilisation on another planet but no way to interpret the remains of writings found in their artifacts and so a colossal warning could be missed

certainly time travel paradoxes offer loads of possibilities.

intergalactic crime could be another one

and how about this little snippet * a near earth civilisation is discovered not too far away -- the civilsation was just about Earth's current level --just on the verges of interplanatary flight

However their sun went Nova -- guess what -- just about the time the "Star of Bethlehem" appeared in our own skies.

We could involve The Vatican hiding the fact because of the problems this might cause its religion etc etc.

There are ENDLESS possibilities -- we don't need zillions of re-cycled re-runs.

Definitely seems that TV as an enjoyment medium has had its day -- won't be too long before mine's in the bin.

Some of it was good while it lasted but modern TV is THE PITS and doesn't seem to offer any prospect of improving either.

The only things that seem to be worth watching these days are the various documentaries on things like Discovery, History Channel, National Geographic etc and for the best COMEDY around watch some of the Wall st channels as Bloomberg and CNBC.

Out here in this little corner of asia, not only do we get what you saw later, but our tv stations occasionally repeat some episodes and not show others. What's up with that anyway, that's seriously screwed up. I remember one series they showed this episode like THREE TIMES - but they didn't air the finale. I remember waiting for it but then they aired something else. Watching tv here is like playing russian roulette.

If you can watch all of The X-Files in 30 days, you can watch for free on their trial membership, but that works out to 6.7 episodes per day.

EDIT: Oops! Make that 7 days, unless they still have the offer for a 30 day trial membership by using IE9.

I will be getting Hulu Plus, already have Netflix.
Decided to get rid of some extra cable features. They are ripping me off for the little content that i do watch on TV.

I can agree with that. I dropped my cable TV back over a year ago, because I rarely found anything on it that I wanted to watch. Of course, I couldn't afford any premium channels, but even if I could, there were more affordable possibilities.

I took down my terrestrial TV antenna, because the only way that I could use it was to prop it up next to the computer, and it only received one channel clear and sharp. However, the decline in programming lately has gotten me to think about digging it out from under the bed.

If you want any good TV with good channels you pay a hefty price, over $80 (US) a month. The cheaper packages consist of, news, news, news, news, with that in mind I decided to chuck cable, that and because our Government has pulled the plug on analog TV. I haven't had cable in half a year, do I miss it, no. I can get most of my information online, and can I watch 100 channels on any given day, no.

I'd like to comment on the list in post #44.

Stargate - Boring Show
Stargate Atlantis - The Original move was good, the TV series, put me to sleep.
Firefly - Buffy the vampire slayer was better then this show.
The 4400 - Couldn't keep my attention, it moved slow, slow is good, sometimes it's too slow.
Eureka - What I read, it's a spin-off from Warehouse 13.
Werehouse 13 - Looks Interesting, may consider watching
Alcatraz (althog i dont know if its consideret scifi) - It's about the Prison, been done many times in the past
BSG - No Comment
Doctor who - B, o, r, i, n, g

While I agree with you about the value of cable TV, and I do know of 100s of TV sources on the internet, I have only found a few which has programming that I like. I never ask advice on an internet source to watch though, because tastes vary far too much. Your list of comments illustrates what I mean.

EDIT: BTW, Eureka began in 2007 and Warehouse 13 in 2009, so if one is a spin-off, it's not Eureka. Yes, Alcatraz uses the prison as a backdrop for the series, but it is unlike any other Alcatraz movies or series that I've seen.

I hadn't heard of The 4400, until reading your list. Since I've not found a free source for watching it, I'm batting around the idea of buying the complete series on DVD, but am still researching it some.

The show began strong but latter became prety bad..in my eyes..you shul but a season at a time..unles its cheaper to buy it whole.

I dont know what for show's you like but those are some of the best scifi show's. the only thing that i can say about stargate i think it went on a little to long. But it was stil an awsome show.
And Eureka came out before Werehouse 13 so its not a spin off.

Werehouse 13? Originally, I thought it was a typo, but since you have repeated it, I'm wondering if there is a series that I don't know about. It sounds like a warehouse where 13 werewolves live. Or is that just the way that it is spelled in Slovenia?

At what point do you feel that the series began it's decline? The reason I ask is because I have only found the first two seasons available. Of course, the complete series is cheaper by the season, but it seems to be the only way to get beyond the first two.

Ok that was a typo. A typo twice My english spelling is bad.

Its a while since i seen it. i think the last season and the 1 before that. i sugest you buy 1 season and then see if its somthing for you.

That may be the best thing to do, but with the pricing that I've found, I can buy the complete series for ~ the same price as season 1 + 2. So even if I don't like the last two, it would be kind of as though they were free anyway...still thinking.

EDIT: Curiously, seasons 3 & 4 are much more expensive than the first two, if bought separately.
