I use the extend feature on my laptop with a second monitor. The only thing on the second monitor's desktop is a couple gadgets and sticky notes, NO icons. I keep all my desktop icons on the primary screen. However, whenever I disconnect my second monitor and take my laptop somewhere, I always turn my computer on to find all my icons randomly bunched up on the left side of the screen. Can anyone help explain/fix this?

OK, so I have my second monitor and power supply for my laptop plugged into a powerstrip and whenever I shut down I usually turn off the power strip when my computer enters the "shutting down" screen. It seems if I wait for my computer to be completely off, and then turn my monitor back on before turning the computer on, this problem is avoided, except for when I take my laptop out of the house.
Honestly, any help would be great.

Hello Destroyer,

If you right click on the desktop and click on "View" to have "Auto arrange icons" and "Allign icons to grid", does that help prevent this from happening?

Hope this helps,
Shawn

Only auto-align to grid was selected. I deselected it, hopefully that'll help. I'll post again once I take my laptop somewhere and find the results.

Ehh... scratch that. It seems like if I unplug the monitor while my computer is on, things are fine. But if I turn on my computer without the second monitor being on, then it scrambles them all again... this is getting annoying...

I'm afraid that I'm stomped as well other than to make sure your computer is on when you unplug the 2nd monitor. :(

Which really isn't that difficult to do whenever I plan to take it somewhere. Thanks for trying though!

Solving icons scrambled after reboot - no more

I solved this issue by rolling back the graphics driver (nVidia in my case), rebooting (verifying that the problem occurred because of a recent system update) and *then* reinstalling the new drivers. That did it, now using the new drivers, but no icon scrambling.
(This is for a T61 Windows 7 U 64/ also with a Thinkpad W510 Windows 7 Pro 64 bit)
