Try FastStone Capture, that's the only one I can think of off the top of my head that will take screenshots like that... It's not free though. I've been using it at work to do screenshots for the last 2 years (I'm a help manual author), works like a dream.

That was the first thing I thought too. But it seems like he wants to have it make a picture file without having to actually do anything beyond pressing a single key.

IB, I agree with you. That would save some time. The only problem I see with it is, what if it is pressed accidentally. On a desktop keyboard, or USB keyboard, chances seems slim, but on a laptop keyboard, the chances a lot higher. Of course, an option to turn it on and off in control panel would take care of that problem.

Congrats on the 600th post.

It seem like that just opens the snipping tool. I meant something more like it creating a new jpeg on the desktop that is whatever was on the screen when you pressed a button.

Yeah, Snipping Tool unfortunately does require more than just one keystroke. Try FastStone Capture though, that definitely does what you mentioned (and a heck of a lot more).

While $20 (USD) does seem quite expensive for a screenshot program, once you've used it and also considering it's a lifetime license, it's not actually that bad a price..

Since you have FRAPS and as FORWOX said, FRAPS is not just for games and can also be used to save screenshots.

Select the "Monitor Aero Desktop (DWM)"

Quote from FRAPS website...
Benchmarking Software - Show how many Frames Per Second (FPS) you are getting in a corner of your screen. Perform custom benchmarks and measure the frame rate between any two points. Save the statistics out to disk and use them for your own reviews and applications.
Screen Capture Software - Take a screenshot with the press of a key! There's no need to paste into a paint program every time you want a new shot. Your screen captures are automatically named and timestamped.
Realtime Video Capture Software - Have you ever wanted to record video while playing your favourite game? Come join the Machinima revolution! Throw away the VCR, forget about using a DV cam, game recording has never been this easy! Fraps can capture audio and video up to 2560x1600 with custom frame rates from 10 to 120 frames per second!

I doubt this would be possible. You would be asking one keystroke to, copy an image, open a program (say Paint) , paste the image and save the image. If it could do this then how would we choose which format to save the image to?

I offer the following not to create an argument but to say how and why I use screenshots as I think I am a fairly average user so many others probably have the same experience:
I use screenshots a lot (I have 52 here on this Forum at the moment) and I need to be able to choose different formats according to what I am going to use the screenshot for. Of the 50 odd screenshots I have on the forum not one is a full screen so even if one keystroke did work I would still need to open Paint, open the image and crop it, then save it again so all I would save is one "Paste " operation!
Anyway why are we talking about Prnt Scrn when we have the Snippet tool? Has always done whatever I have asked of it.
