I have used MWSnap for several years. Free. It is not being updated much, if at all, so it could break with the next update. But it is very tweakable. Auto-saves with sequential or time-based file names. Several settable hot-keys. Can auto insert to clipboard, does most menus.

Several file formats, gif, png, jpg, tiff... Plus ruler, color picker, zoom...
I use it mostly for just quick snapping as another trail of bread crumbs, when I am doing something new. (As I get older I need more crutches.)
