Screen saver set to 10 minutes, does not initiate.

This machine has been giving me difficulty since day 1. I've worked with HP and replaced the hard drive and Optical drive which resolved the one issue and performance improvements were noticed. However, there are still issues with the laptop - I'll most likely send it to them to replace as I believe it to be wither the MOBO or one of the chips on it.

Anyway, to the point of this thread - maybe someone can suggest something I haven't tried (basically setting all themes and power options to various values).

Speccy published here

I have a MS Wireless Laser Desktop 6000 (mouse and keyboard) that might be keeping the system "awake". This too has caused me difficulty on Win7.
Updating from MS Hardware installs Intellitype and Intellipoint and supporting drivers (transceiver detection, filters)

Updating in WU installs:
Microsoft USB Dual Receiver Wireless Keyboard (Mouse and Keyboard Center)
Microsoft USB Dual Receiver Wireless Mouse (Mouse and Keyboard Center)
Other hardware - Microsoft Hardware USB Keyboard
Other hardware - Microsoft Hardware USB Mouse
Other hardware - HID Non-User Input Data Filter (KB 911895)
Other hardware - HID Non-User Input Data Filter (KB 911895)

The WU hardware update disabled all mouse specific customization (keyboard only in the "Mouse and Keyboard Center") as well as in Control Panel -> mouse.

The mouse and keyboard for both installs were basically unusable (keys not typing, mouse actions jittery or incomplete - a drag and drop would drop anywhere, a scroll would highlight or select...). I replaced batteries in both devices - nope, I uninstalled bluetooh - nope, I disabled the Synaptics touchpad - nope, I backed off the filters - better, I moved teh transceiver from a USB 2.0 to a USB 3.0 port - better, but new issue (wireless signal weak after 30-??? minutes - random).

So as it is now - no filters, IP & ITP installed, in USB 3.0 port, no bluetooth. Things work well enough, but there are the same, albeit intermittent, problems that still crop up.

The screen saver issue came up after I moved the KB & Mouse to the USB 3.0 port. Also, due to the flaky mouse, I accidentally opened AMD Vision Engine Control Center which has some configuration options for power

Thanks for any and all suggestions, but don't spend too much time on this.

Bill

Hi Bill,

Having your keyboard and mouse connected to a usb3 slot may well cause issues. It will be sending signals to your computer constently. Have you also notcied mouse lag?

Not sure why Screen saver isnt "triggering" this could possibely be linked to the Mouse and keyboard issue. ( computer not thinking its idle )

Have you tried setting up a task scheduler? For a screen Saver to trigger if the computer is idle for x minutes. Just to check weather it works that way.

When creating a task in the Scheduler it will ask for a programe to trigger, you will need to specify \windows\system32\*.scr

It could be "mouse creep" Bill, where the mouse moves on its own due to not being level, vibrations, etc.
I'm sure the mouse and KB would send signals constantly since they are wireless (radio signal) whether USB 2.0 or 3.0.

Well then.... the Desktop Laser 6000 did not make the Win7 compatility list found here

and.... the tech sheet for the keyboard on the MS hardware download site lists V3 as the product version.

I went back to see if the individual mouse and keyboard (v2) would make a difference - nope, it's actually the same driver. So, the download site and the install program don't inform the user of a version difference or verify teh hardware version.. Oh well, I guess MS gets off the hook by saying "It's not on the compatability list" even though they clearly provide a Win7 (and Win8) driver for the device.

I'll see if the KB and mouse run without all the bells and whistles of the driver.

The screen saver is working now that I unplugged and uninstalled the MS not-so-Intelli stuff. But my new 20" monitor isn't much use hiding behind the laptop screen (no keyboard or mouse without opening the lid).

I'll leave this open until I report on the usefulness of the hardware without the drivers. I can live without the device specific buttons/keys. It burns me that I have to buy new hw. Ah well, the hw will find a home on one of my older devices (I hope! :p )

I mentioned removing Bluetooth in my initial post. HA! I wnet ot put it back and HP doesn't list a driver for the embedded BCM WLAN chip and the BCM install wizard fails pointing me back to HP for the driver. HA! S'ok I don't have any BT devices anyway - it is just another thing that burns me up. The HP forums all point to Win8 drivers or devices that almost match (20702 but not 20702A0).

While I'm kevetching... I decided that a Bios update might help. The laptaop was running "hot" (60-70 C) and I manged to bring the temp down (35-45 C) by uninstalling HP CoolSense (that made sense - NOT!). Anyway, you should have heard the fans spin when I updated the Bios - sounded like a Hoover vaccuum - and that's how I feel about this machine - it sucks.

Thanks for everyone's input

Bill

The only advantage I got from my mouse's (Gigabyte wired m6900) is that it shows a pretty image in Devices and Printers. Other than that it operates fine with the MS generic mouse driver.
The Gigabyte software also needs a program to start and run to keep settings, I don't like that.

All kvetching welcome! :D

Solved - use generic drivers, not Intelli-anything

That's that then. Everything working fine.
  1. disconnect transceiver
  2. uninstall devices from device manager, ticking box "remove software" when offered
    • user environment variable DEVMGR_SHOW_NONPRESENT_DEVICES=1
    • view hidden devices
    • ALL related entries for Intelli-x - HID, mouse, keyboard, USB device detect, filters, etc
  3. search c:\ for Intelli
    • delete device folders (Intellipoint & Intellitype)
    • files in use - hmmmmmm
    • uninstall device drivers in Control Panel -> Programs and Features
    • check WU - installed updates, none found that could be removed
    • reboot
    • delete device folders (Intellipoint & Intellitype) - deleted without issue
  4. Connect transceiver - new hardware found, generic drivers installed
  5. Test devices, check Control Panel - > Devices and Printers (KB, Mouse, & Tranceiver present)
    • things seem better - no mouse drag-n-drop issue, no missed keystrokes
    • hey, even the volume, mute, pause, next/previous keys work.
    • without specific driver, I can't determine if the weak signal issue exists for the KB - but it works
So for now this case is solved, I'm not worried about the BCM Bluetooth - HP will hear from me on that.

Solution: purge the system of the device specific drivers and use the generic drivers.

The Blue Tooth driver may be part of the chipset driver pack so can't be removed on its own. If you don't want it go into Services and disable Blue Tooth Service and click stop or reboot.
You could try the Driver Sweeper link under my sig and see if it picks up any rascally left behinds. The Revo Uninstaller Free may help too, watch out for "important offers" if you install Revo or DS.

Gary,
BT is packaged with the broadcom WLAN chipset as far as I can tell, the driver install is seperate (HP lists an Atheros BT driver, but not :warn:BCM20720A0 (device manager)) on the Driver & Downlaods page for this machine.

I'm good with BT service disabled, no BT devices anyway. Thanks for your advice and council.
