Seagate Free Agent Voltage Input Requirement ?

Hello,

Have a fairly old Seagate Free Agent Desk external HD. 1 TB
P/N 9zc2ag-501
Silver case. Sits "flat" on desk. Lighted icon on front sloping edge.

Can't find the power brick that came with it specifically, but I have boxes full
of them.

a. do these HD's take AC or DC from the brick output ?

b. Any idea on correct voltage level it "probably requires ?

Bob they are 12vdc and iirc at least 2A. Yes just checked now.

I have a variety of Seagate externals, one a newer Desk as yours (uses a wall-wart transformer) and an older "PushButton" with even the now-ancient squarish USB port. This latter one uses a power brick with a removeable AC cord. Either type will work! Of course, the center conductor is Plus if you use a VOM to check one of your "boxes full of them" power bricks!

Unfortunately Seagate never to my knowledge made any effort to "mark" these so I suffered your malady recently having to figure this out. This Desk wallwart I'm looking at now says "Asian Power Devices Inc" on it but there's no telling I suppose what Seagate might have packaged over the years.

I do try these days to put a piece of tape on all my wallwarts with the gizmo it's for written on it!

Have you tried a routine internet search with the model number or the Seagate support page?

Also, it's been my experience with USB external hard drives over the years that the connections for these are brands-specific and proprietary.
In other words, an AC adapter for Brand X will not work with Brand Y?
Moreover, using a non-brand AC adapter might void a warranty and could damage the drive?

But someone more expert in these matters may have different/better advice.

MM I had done that some days ago, and amazingly the Seagate support area does not answer this simple question.

Trust me, I have 4 or 5 of the things, and no the power bricks are not proprietary in any way. You just gotta have 12vdc 2A and the right plug to fit.

There's the rub -- each brand has its own "plug" that only fits its own device.
Different hardware entirely.
At least that has been my experience with different brands over the years.
Perhaps "any" "Seagate" AC adapter would fit "any" "Seagate" drive and would work.
I don't know and haven't tried it.

But the plug of the AC adapter for -- for example -- my Iomega drive is not compatible with the my Seagate drive, nor vice versa.
Proverbial "square plug" into "round hole".

Having said that, I, too mark each "brick" with the external drive to which it belongs.
Excellent idea!

Search for replacement adapters finds that they are 12V DC tip Positive (+) 2A.

I concur that the vast majority of external HDDs require a 12VDC power supply capable of 1A or greater, and usually Center (tip) positive.
