Firstly hi to everyone here on the forums.:D

My problem is when I go into computer (my computer) the search in the top right isn't working from within this window!

However if I click to go into an individual drive the search will then work from within there on the individual drive.
Its strange.:sarc:

At first it told me the index had been switched off, so I turned it back on even rebuilt the index. & its still the same except it doesn't tell me about the index when I try to search anymore.

It will still search within the individual drives but not from within the computer window.

Apart from this the installation works fine. I even run a scan with Kaspersky & Spybot S&D to make sure of any nasties causing it.
& run a CHkdisk this morning.
I would rather not have to perform a system restore or new installation if I can help it. It took me ages to install all my apps & don't fancy doing it again.

Any help would be appriciated if any one has any ideas

Hi, there is no error(s), it doesn't do anything. The word / letters I type in remain in the box but nothing happens when I press enter. I have the filter options all there also but still nothing.

It's impossible to find threads dealing with this anywhere on the internet! My PC just started doing this a few weeks ago!

It doesn't work with or without Indexing enabled. I can still search everywhere else on my PC, just not directly from My Computer. I can type in the box, press enter, and nothing happens. Ever!

It's so frustrating..

EDIT
Alright, I sat down and thought on it. And thought on it. And then tried something.
I removed my unconnected Network Location that is only valid when my Laptop is turned on.

And now it works.

I hope this helps someone else, since this annoyed me for months.

Thank you!!! I had been trying to find the cause of this problem for some time, and this was the first post I found detailing my exact same problem and the solution!

Disconnect Drive, Re-map drive

I had the same issue, I tried un-indexing the drive then re-indexing the drive, nothing worked till I disconnected the offending drive then remapped it. After that, I was able to search the drive normally.

Systems permissions and search

I had a similar problem with the "Public" files. The problem I had was with security settings.

The following is from the Microsoft website:

Improve Windows searches using the index: frequently asked questions

Why aren't files from an indexed folder showing up in search results?

It might be because of the security settings for that folder. For a folder and its content to be indexed, it must be configured with the System permission. Most folders already have this, but there are some cases where a folder might be missing the System permission.
To add the System permission to a folder

  1. Right-click the folder, click Properties, and then click the Security tab.
  2. If you don't see System listed under Group or user names, click Edit.
  3. Click Add, type System in the box that appears, and then click Check Names.
  4. Under Matching names, click System, and then click OK until all of the open dialog boxes you've opened are closed.

(In my case, System was listed. Allowing system control was needed to get search to work. In another instance, I had to force changed by unmarking an remarking controls before selecting "apply")

You'll need to rebuild the index once you've made this change. To learn about rebuilding the index, see Change advanced indexing options.

I have the same situation, but only when I assign a drive letter to a virtual drive using Power Iso or similar program. I simply set the number of drives to none while not needed a virtual drive.
