Security Updates Fail [80071A91] after image restore

Hello!

Sorry for the delay. I needed time to think this one over. Nightmare!

I had a feeling that was a typo. I don't even think that setautotest is even an option, but I wanted it re-run, typo or not.

Right, I am going to take two small portions of your registry, your Schema hive, and your Components sub hive. Maybe I will see some sort of damage in them which may explain the continued symptoms.

I need you to retry those updates one last time. I need to be absolutely sure that if I see anything which needs fixing, I fix them with the very latest log reports. Can I also ask that you do each one separately, including restarting separately for the second two updates.

Then run FireGenUL: Altair Technologies Ltd.

Then copy to a new Logs folder on your Desktop these:

C:\Windows\System32\FireGenUL.htm
C:\Windows\System32\SMI\Store\Machine\Schema.dat
C:\Windows\System32\config\COMPONENTS

NOTE: The components file is the only one without a file extension.

Zip up the folder, and upload.

Thanks!

Richard

No worries; it's good to try again, anyways. :D

OK, the log files are attached. I had to boot into Safe Mode to be able to copy or compress COMPONENTS, so there was an extra reboot in there. I hope that didn't mess anything up? If it did, I can boot into Safe Mode directly after the 3rd update's install.

I ran KB2443685 update (usually fails with error code 80070643), then KB2305420 (usually fails with error code 80071A91, then rebooted. Then installed KB2416400 (usually fails with error code 80071A91), rebooted. Tried to make archive, said "file was in use." Restarted into Safe Mode, copied file, made archive.

I noticed Windows has its own "registry cleaner" thing (it scans for spyware and checks the registry); should I try it?

Thanks,

~Ibrahim~

OK, I gave in. I performed a Repair installation of Windows with my Win7 DVD and the updates work! It took five hours (I have no idea why so long), but now all three updates worked!! :D

Glad you got it fixed.

I was thinking you were running out of other options.

Hello!

I am really glad the issue is now fixed! Sorry it took a little bit. It is these little corruptions which we never seem able to track down. Anyway, I have downloaded your registry. I will see if I can find out what the issue was. Note that this will only ever be academic, as fixing this would have been extremely risky, had I ever actually found the cause.

Well done, and thank you so much for the +rep!

Have a very wonderful Christmas, and I look forward to working with you again, just hopefully not for a problem!

Richard

Thanks, Mike; me, too.

And a giant thank you, too, Richard. I went poking around that Driver Sweeper and, sure enough, it had deleted those same files you gave me. Program's deleted now, :D

Right, after you mentioned the registry, I thought, ah, screw it, I'll just do a reinstall. It went all right; a few random drivers had to be reinstalled.

But, seriously, thank you for being diligent in fixing the problem; most others would've given in a long time ago (myself included, lol!). :D The effort you put in is astounding, really. :D

You, too! The snow is slowly melting, but it just needs to stick it out for just a few more days!

Likewise. :D
