See Wireless Network But Can't Connect to It

Just bought a new Acer Aspire Laptop today with Windows 7 Home. Out of the box and ready to go. I can see my wireless network in my network connections. I have tried to connect to it but it says its unable to connect. All my other computers in the house are able to connect wirlessly right now. I have reset the router but no help. I think I am missing soemthing fairly simple here whereas I can see my wireless networks and everyone elses in the neighborhood near me (all encrypted so I can't try thiers).

What am I missing?

Are you using homegroup for networking? are there any non win 7 computers on the network?

can you type cmd in search>ipconfig /all. take a screen shot and upload it to us

I am not using homegroup for networking. There are 2 pcs total on the network that use XP Pro.

Hmmmmm.......can't find a place to enable netbios in services or under TCIP anywhere.......

Just googled this problem and I see there are big problems with trying to connect Windows 7 to a wireless network. What a shame that Microsft released another buggy operating system. You would have thought they would have learned with VISTA.

I just plugged the laptop directly into the router and voola! It is connected to the internet and I am able to browse the web. Just need to fix the wireless part now...........

How is your wireless network configured? Are you using WPA2/AES? Did you enter the SSID correctly and use the correct password? What actual error message did you get when you tried to connect to the network?

It helps if you provide your network configuration details, so we can properly diagnosis the problem.

You could have a firewall or anti virus preventing your from connecting wireless. I would check to see what came pre-installed.

Now that you are connected to internet have a look at windows update and see if you have a driver update to install for your Acer Notify 802.11b/g/Draft-N adapter.

I will do that. I have downloaded all the updates for the laptop. Firewall is disables as well as the antivirus. These are the first things I did. LIke I said I can see my network, as well as all the neoighbors around me networks (all secured) mine is open.

You've asked for newtork details. What would you like to see - some screen shots of the network configuration from the adapter tab?

In the connect to network box its says Windows was unable to connect to (my SSID name)

Updated Acer Notify 802.11b/g/Draft-N driver (driver was current)

I would check the router settings as well.

To do that, Find your default Gateway IP address.
and type that address into your Browser, it is usually 192.168.0.1

Check your routers wireless settings..
Do you have other computers connecting to your wireless, if so are they working?

Yes......I have an XP machine connected to the network wirelessly..............

Have you tried windows 7 troubleshooter? Type trouble into seach and click on troubleshooting and then network connection.

Yeah......used the troubleshooter....a couple of times.......no luck....

Some have suggested that ip6 can cause problems you can try unticking that and while there see if auto connect is selected in ip4. Give this a try if you have not already.
