On your System Specs you show you're using XP Pro. If you really are using XP Pro Black Viper also has tweaks for 32-bit with SP3 and 64-bit with SP2 (Popular Content, 3rd item down.)

The Black Viper web site has very complete information about each service and its dependencies. I cut 4 seconds (17%) off my Win 7 x64 start up using the information on Black Viper's by totally disabling several unneeded services some of which were there just to collect information for MS.

There are no unneeded services on Win7 that will not cause complications if disabled. It has all services not needed at Startup set to Manual fast triggers.

Those of us who tried Vliting it for performance during beta quickly found out that there is no performance to be gained by turning off important networking and security services, just problems, so the only need for Vlite is to size it down (minus language and driver packs) for netbooks.

This is not XP or even Vista. This is a pefectly balanced, stripped down OS that has itself become the Black Viper.

To improve performance, upgrade hardware or get a cleaner install without any 3rd party tweaks or optimization whatsoever.

maybe the default microsoft service configuration is all cool and groovy for everybody (debatable), but as soon as you start installing third-party drivers and software, it won't be long until you start adding bloaty junk to the system.

trouble is there are so many third-party services out there, that it's difficult to give you a list of what you can safely get rid of.

msconfig would be a good place to start >> services >> hide all microsoft services.

you have to be real careful, you could find that things don't work properly once you start mucking about.

if you can't stop yourself from tweaking, be sure to disable things one at a time, and test test TEST!

This is a short list of 15 of Services that I have no need for on my Win 7 computer. I have many more Services disabled and as many as 8 of them were running when I disabled them that had been running since start up. I'm not encouraging the disabling of services in Win 7 its just that I can not see the sense of leaving the potential for dozens of unneeded services running in the background.

Pretty much most of those services are set as "Manual" and are not running. Setting them to "Disable" does absolutely nothing. Those services are only activated when needed.

Yes, the Black Viper website has that exact same information about those 15 Services in Windows 7 and much much more! There was enough information there to allow me to in addition to those 15 services I disabled 8 other Services that were already running which were totally unnecessary all of which were consuming system resources. I do not like frivolous waste on my computer and I disable what I don't need. How can that possibly be wrong? And all though I always keep a complete set of backups I've never had to use any restore points, System Image recovery or Macrium Reflect Disk Images after eliminating the many wasteful and unneeded services in Win 7 some of which are for future protocols which will not exist for years.

As LogicEarth says those services are set to Manual already so are not running unless they are called upon.

Setting them to Disable is messing with perfection - Win7 is already as stripped down as can be.

The development of Manual fast triggers and SuperPreFetch are genius elements of Win7 which have resulted in the first feather-light instantaneous OS on almost any modern hardware.

Why mess with perfection? Many of us tried during Beta and learned the hard way that Win7 is the real deal.

Greg- I agree with you that Win 7 is the real deal! I just can't get my head around why I need Services enabled for a Fax machine, Bluetooth and other features that I do not use. I realize that Win 7 must come equipped for everyone's needs including people who genuinely need those Services which is indeed perfection, but as for my personal needs perfection is having unneeded Services temporarily disabled so that if I should need them I can just switch them back on with a single click of the mouse. I'm not trying to argue with you its just that I consider the perfect Win 7 as tailored to my needs and not everyone else's.

Hi Maxx -

You're welcome to mess with your property as much as you want, but the issue is that for the average user who turns to us for guidance these services which might not be utilitized at first can appear to malfunction if they are disabled and later needed. It's cruel irony if BlackViper - whose hugely popular service edits so influenced Win7 5 years ago - is followed now and Dad suddenly doesn't know why his new fax machine or Bluetooth won't work.

So IMO it isn't necessary to encourage any service edits since any that are not immediately needed by Win7 are set to Manual anyway. In Beta the exception was Ult's Offline Files but that seems to be gone now unless you move a file across network - many don't know that keeps it in sync.

Vista's early performance as a bloatmonstrosity was largely because it carried over dozens of Auto service settings as in XP but had more resource demands OOB due to Aero and an unpolished SuperPreFetch. It was during Win7's early development (they should have code-named it Black Viper) that these services were changed to Manual fast triggers and slipped into Vista SP2 to save that OS's reputation. It is now a quite manageable OS but not as elegantly so and streamlined as Win7.

you've mentioned 'manual fast triggers' a few times, greg.

can you tell us some more about them?

I read it in on the Win7 developers blog in early Beta about how they were able to move more services off of Automatic onto Manual.

Don't any more about it than that.

They used Task Scheduler to start services when a certain event is issued (which is defined as a"trigger").

Hi Maxx - The issue is that for the average user who turns to us for guidance these services which might not be utilized at first can appear to malfunction if they are disabled and later needed.

greg- Well if you are talking about people who would modify their Win 7 computer's Services without making a backup or at the very least make screenshots of the original settings then your point is well taken.
