Services - Restore Default Services in Windows 7

How to Restore Default Services in Windows 7

   Information
This tutorial provides you with registry downloads that will completely restore any of the default services and their settings you want in Windows 7. This can be handy if a service was deleted by mistake, is missing, or had it's properties set improperly.

You must be logged in as an administrator to be able to do the steps in this tutorial.

   Note
Services are located in the registry location below.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services

   Warning
Do not add a service to a Windows 7 edition that the service was not available in by default. It will not work since it was never included in that edition.

If you did not delete a default service, then you might consider doing a full scan of your system at boot with a program like Windows Defender Offline to help make sure that your system is clean.

Here's How:1. Click on the Display Name link in the table below of the service that you would like to restore to download it's .reg file.

2. Save the .reg file to your desktop.

3. Right click on the downloaded .reg file and click on Merge.
NOTE: If you wish to see what changes will be made by the REG file, then you can right click on the extracted REG file and click on Edit to see the default registry entries that will be added. REG files are just text files. The "Edit" function just opens them in Notepad.

   Tip
If you do not see a Merge option when you right click on the REG file, then you will need to check in Default Programs to set the reg file extension to have it's Current Default program set as Registry Editor (C:\Windows\regedit.exe). Afterwards, try merging the REG file again.
4. If prompted, click on Run, Yes (UAC), Yes, and OK.

5. Repeat all of the above steps if you would like to restore another service.

6. When finished, restart the computer to apply.

7. When finished, you can delete the downloaded .reg file(s) on the desktop if you like

Another great tutorial, Shawn. Could this also be used if a cbs.log (for example) indicated a damaged or corrupt service?

Hello Lee,

Yep, it could be used for that as well since it would restore the default registry entries and settings for the service. :)

It's for this:

Facilitates the running of interactive applications with additional administrative privileges. If this service is stopped, users will be unable to launch applications with the additional administrative privileges they may require to perform desired user tasks.

As a test, right click on a 3rd party program (ex: CCleaner) that you have installed and click on Run as administrator to see if will work for you or not. If it does, then you are fine.

Does anyone Know if any of these would be compatible with Vista Home Premium 64.

I'm interested in fixing the service "bthserv"

More Info on why-

5years ago I used the command >sc delete "bthserv"

Now I'd like to restore it. I tried the command sc create "bthserv", and or sc create "bthserv" binfile= "c:\windows\system32\svchost.exe -k bthsvcs"

The last added a bthserv entry to services.msc, but the service fails to start in a timely manner.

Hell Towel,

Some services are and some aren't the same in Vista.

I don't have the bthserv service in my Vista to compare them, but you can give it a try to see if it may help. If it doesn't help, then the .reg file below will remove the bthserv .reg file entries.

Hope this helps, :)
Shawn

Thank you very much for you quick reply. I've noticed I don't see that service at all when looking at vista services on sites such as Blackvipers.

I do how ever have the bthserv.dll in both my system32 and syswow64 folders.

And I clearly remember using the SC commands to delete the service years back.

So I'm starting to wonder If I'm some how on the wrong track, after browsing the windowsforums here, I've noticed you're quite knowledgeable, so if you haven't seen it as a vista service before, could the problem be something else?

Does Vista have hidden services not shown on services.msc?

The whole reason I'm at this point is because I'm trying to install bluetooth again for a ps3 controllers wireless ability. But cant turn the built in bluetooth device on through wireless console 2, it doest even show up, and therefor cant install the needed drivers.

In any case, I've downloaded the file u provided, and had the other already, and will be giving them a go after some rest. If it fails, I'll prob start a new thread? Feels Like Im no longer on topic at this point, sorry fellow forum users.

None hidden. All services are listed.

If the download helps, not sure it will, then yes please do create a new thread for your ps3 controllers to see if we may be able to help.
