Services - Restore Default Services in Windows 7

How to Restore Default Services in Windows 7

   Information
This tutorial provides you with registry downloads that will completely restore any of the default services and their settings you want in Windows 7. This can be handy if a service was deleted by mistake, is missing, or had it's properties set improperly.

You must be logged in as an administrator to be able to do the steps in this tutorial.

   Note
Services are located in the registry location below.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services

   Warning
Do not add a service to a Windows 7 edition that the service was not available in by default. It will not work since it was never included in that edition.

If you did not delete a default service, then you might consider doing a full scan of your system at boot with a program like Windows Defender Offline to help make sure that your system is clean.

Here's How:1. Click on the Display Name link in the table below of the service that you would like to restore to download it's .reg file.

2. Save the .reg file to your desktop.

3. Right click on the downloaded .reg file and click on Merge.
NOTE: If you wish to see what changes will be made by the REG file, then you can right click on the extracted REG file and click on Edit to see the default registry entries that will be added. REG files are just text files. The "Edit" function just opens them in Notepad.

   Tip
If you do not see a Merge option when you right click on the REG file, then you will need to check in Default Programs to set the reg file extension to have it's Current Default program set as Registry Editor (C:\Windows\regedit.exe). Afterwards, try merging the REG file again.
4. If prompted, click on Run, Yes (UAC), Yes, and OK.

5. Repeat all of the above steps if you would like to restore another service.

6. When finished, restart the computer to apply.

7. When finished, you can delete the downloaded .reg file(s) on the desktop if you like

Hello,
I've encountered some problems with my Bluetooth Device Monitor service which was taking too long to start and the whole PC was unsuseble about 30 minutes after system boot.
In my looking for solution I came across this thread, saw "all" windows services and deleted the Bluetooth Device Monitor service with the "sc delete" command. Unfortunately, this service is not here to download. Can some provide this service as the .reg file?

Hello Mir, and welcome to Seven Forums.

I don't have that service to upload to you. However, you could also do a system restore using a restore point (if available) dated before you deleted the service to restore it.

Hope this helps, :)
Shawn

Thx for your replay. Using restore point is kind of problem. Got it disabled because of small SSD used as system disk. Need to solve this problem but frankly I don't know where to start.
I uninstalled bluetooth drivers and all bluetooth hardware and reinstalled it again and the service is back but so is the problem. Service is stuck in Starting state and it f*cks up the whole system. Can't run Network and Sharing Center, Power Options and basicaly no system settings. I get only empty explorer window.
Problem persist around 30 minutes than computer disconnects itself from the net and started Bluetooth Support Service and followingly even Bluetooth Device monitor. Everything works perfectly till this moment to next restart.

You might see if changing the "Bluetooth Device monitor" service to either be "Automatic (Delayed start)" or "Manual" may work better.

Firstly was problem to change the type of startup and change to Automatic (delayed start) was no effect but after uninstall bluetooth drivers deleteing devices from the device manager somehow make this solution to work. So for now - it works! But still, I'm kind of curious about what caused this problem.

That's great news. Not sure what it was either.

It's pretty weird. Didn't installed anything new. Would be great if there was some complete log for various changes made in system to track down the source of those problems.

I'm familiar with concept of image backup but I rejected this solution while ago from one reason - updates. I have the feeling that restoring ten month old image and waiting for all the updates to download is only slightly less work than to reinstall the whole system. I'm using image backup only before LAN Party with my friends ;)
Also I've got SSD and HDD in my laptop. SSD just for system and HDD for other files, so the system reinstall would be much quicker than finding the solution to this problem. It took a few hours to resolve this. But I had no mood to reinstall just now, so I'm glad that I solved.

This is a great tutorial.

I'm running Win 7 Pro x64. Do you have a download to restore the Machine Debug Manager service to its original default condition? I didn't see it listed in the table.

I was fooling around trying to resolve an issue and I made a lot of changes to the various settings in that service. When you right click the service and select properties, there is a set to default button, but I'm no sure it resets all the ownership settings as well as everything else.

If there was a download for the Machine Debug Manager that would restore the service to in original default condition, it would give me some peace of mind, because I sometimes wonder if I did something that I shouldn't have done.

Regards

Hello Tjg,

I don't seem to have the Machine Debug Manager (mdm.exe) service listed on my systems by default. Do you happen to have Visual Studio installed? That service is mention a lot with this program while Googling.

Hello Brink,

I don't have Visual Studio installed, but I do have Microsoft Visual C++ 2005, 2008 & 2010 (x64 & x86) Redistributables installed. I think these packages were installed due to the requirements of different programs. I also have Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1, 4 (Client Profile & Extended) installed.

I didn't seek out and download these packages. I know that some programs like Seagate Seatools requires some of these add-ons.

I didn't realize that the Machine Debug Manager wasn't a standard install with Win 7 Pro x64.

Regards

If you have a restore point dated before you had this issue, then you could do a system restore with it to undo the changes.

Unfortunately, I didn't have the restore point. Also, I was resolving several Windows Log System errors and warnings and didn't want to completely undue what I had fixed.

That's why your individual service restores are so useful.
