Setting up a second Network

Hi

I have three PC's a W7 Pro and two Vista Home Premium.

I have an ADSL modem with both Wireless and Ethernet output, the Ethernet cable is connected to a splitter and two PC's are connected through the splitter, the third is connected by wireless.

Up to now I have only used the modem etc for Internet connection sharing, now I need to Network all three PC's so I can share printing and have full access to files etc.

Can I create another Network without hurting the Internet sharing setup?

Thanks

Daniel

There is no simple free way. Your best bet is to get a router and connect it to your adsl modem, then connect your 3 machines to the router. This will give shared internet to 3 machines and allow you to network them. Routers can be had for less than 40 USD.

You want to put all three computers on the network and share them.. I am pretty sure that is what your saying and I am pretty sure you are capable of doing that with the ASDL box that you have....

Does your ASDL have 4 ports plus wireless. I think I am getting that right.

The thing you have to figure out is how far apart are one another, do you want to go straight wireless/wired or combination, and how do you want them set up because there are million different combinations

Yes that is correct, I can have two connected to the ADSL Modem/Router (one the W7) and one must be wireless. The wireless PC is right next to the ADSL Router

You need a router like the first guy said. You need to spend money for that but thats how most of the free world sets up a network. Those combo modems aren't too good for this. Get a real modem and connect it to a real router with eithernet cable using the WAN ports.

To help us all out.. can you give us.. the make- model- and version of your ASDL modem so we know for sure if you have the router built in and also we can look up the manual so we can tell you how to set it up.

Any way you can post exactly what ADSL modem you have. If the modem does actually have a router with DHCP/NAT capabilities then you can buy a switch instead of a router. I really need to know the modem information though.

Thanks.... H

It sounded more like he was using ICS with the "splitter" rather than a switch. Man I hate those combo units. It's a bit tough to visulize these things from here and the desciption leaves quite a bit to the imagination.

If he did have a modem/router I wouldn't think setting up shares should be so difficult?

I know what you have there but the problem is that I do not see a router "real router" in your network, not a combo modem with internet access. Maybe if you post the model number of your modem I can look up it's capabilities and see if it can be used to set up an actual network. Creating a second network for this isn't really a good idea. You want one network with full functionality.

From what I have read your Thompson TG782T should have router and DHCP capablities. You say you are already sharing files between systems so it should be possible to share with other Windows OP systems as well. I'm a bit unsure about what you meant by network splitter? We use switches on our networks these days?

Are you having any particular problem with sharing?

From what I see. You should have 4 yellow ports on the back of your modem. Connecting each of your computers into one of those ports will then allow you to connect your computers easily in windows. You can use windows home on each to get things rolling (for a quick and simple setup). Or you can do it all manually setting shares and the likes.

Does you modem have the 4 yellow ports on the back and are does each of your wired computers connect to one of the 4 ports?

Yes the Modem has four yellow ports.

Two PC's are connected through a D-Link Switch (I thought a Switch and Splitter were the same thing) I can connect these two PC's directly through the yellow ports but I would prefer to connect the third PC (Vista Home Premium) through wireless to save having cable across the floor.

I don't understand why you need to use ICS at all... if all 3 machines are connected to the router then they should all have internet access, ICS is only used when only 1 machine has internet access....

Or am I missing the point?
