Hello and Welcome ecair4151,

If I understand correctly, you want to connect to your PC desktop at home from anywhere including whilst at school?

If so, other than opening your PC up to exposer, the one way is to use Remote Desktop. But the Desktop needs to be XP Pro, XP MCE2005 or higher, Windows Se7en Pro or higher. Its easier if you leave the desktop on, but you can use free apps like magicpacket to wake a Desktop Up even when its left turned off.

If this is what your trying to do , post & I'll search the tutorial sec. for "Remote Desktop" and help ya a little easier. Don't know for sure if its there, but I'd bet the farm it is!

No you don't need to do anything at school, just need an internet connection.

Try this, but keep in mind that you must be running an OS that I listed above, or you won't have the option to connect remotely via MS Remote Desktp.

Here's a way to check if you have remote desktop on your "Desktop" PC:

If XP: right click on "My Computer" icon and click Properties. Then choose "Remote", it should look like this if you have it:

View attachment 122199

If Se7en: Right Click on "Computer" and click "Properties" in the left colum click "Remote settings", it should look like this:

View attachment 122201

Without them, you would need to most likely buy a Remote PC Connection Program.

They do have software like symantec that can do this on any OS, but any that are free, not sure.

Start here if you have Remote Desktop on your PC....

http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/3922-remote-desktop-connection-rdc-network.html

and either post questions back here, or if more related to set-up questions you could post in the tutorial too, just no double posting please.

Good Luck

Forgeta'bout all that, just check if the desktop you want to connect to (your "home" desktop) and see if you have those settings. Post back if you have remote desktop or not.

Is this your computer, or the schools?
Are you in a high school or college?
What exactly are YOU trying to do?

Entering the proxy settings in Firefox is a way to allow a portable internet browser to access the internet through the schools proxy server (which allows websites to be blocked).

Basically, OP is asking how to Remote to their home PC from school.

Unless you can use something like Goto MyPC or maybe LogMeIn from the web, there are others.

Or applications like Dameware, TightVNC or other.

If you are not referring to Remote Desktop capabilities as I have mentioned and just want to access files on the system like an FTP site, you can set that up using built-in IIS.

Or you might setup an FTP Server using other software. Like Filezilla.

It depends on really what it is that you are wanting to do exactly.

But VPN is not what you are really looking for.
Unless you are wanting to use VPN to connect remotely to your home PC and use it as a gateway to mapped resources and/or (i think) as a proxy server? I'm a little fuzzy on those capabilities.

VPN is not the same as Remote Desktop stuff.

OR,,,,, maybe you want to install a Proxy Server on your home PC,,, then you can setup the proxy settings on the browser at school,, (maybe) and use your own proxy server.

http://www.ehow.com/how_6639803_install-proxy-server.html

But keep in mind that all this does is provide a gateway out to the full web, without restrictions. This doesn't have anything to do with connecting to your Home PC and accessing files, etc.

Just do a search for proxy sites, or proxy servers, you will need to research this information.
There are many ways to accomplish what you want.
It will more depend on what the school systems will allow.

VPN might actually work then (from my experiences with it).

What you want to do is set up PPTP to forward traffic from that port to your (always on) home computer.
Assuming your home computer is running Seven, do this:
Open the Network and Sharing Center
Click on Change Adapter Settings
Hit ALT to bring up the menu bar, and click on New Incoming Connection under File
Choose your user
Choose over the Internet
Check all 4 boxes
Click allow access

This should allow the computer to accept an INCOMING VPN connection.

Now you need to allow the ports through the Router to the computer.
Open command prompt and type ipconfig
Write down the INTERNAL IP address, which will be something like 192.168.1.x
Open a browser window and type 192.168.1.1 into the address bar
You will need to login to the router page (look up your router for defaults)
Somewhere on the menu will be a Port Forwarding/Port Triggering tab/link
Create a new service, called PPTP
Forward port 1723 to the internal IP address of the computer
Save settings, and exit

This should forward VPN traffic to that computers internet connection, allowing access.

Give this a try from an external network (like on a laptop).
Create a new internet connection
Select connect to a work/VPN connection
Type in your EXTERNAL IP Address (which you can find at What Is My IP Address - Shows Your IP Address)
Type in your username and password and you should be connected.

They are on a school computer, which I think is assumed that nothing can be installed on it or configured other than Browser Proxy settings.

Not sure if we should give support about this or not, but have you read up on how to create a proxy server?

Don't forget that you need to go through your schools as well.

Well, technically this is breaking school rules. Also, I don't know how to setup a proxy server anyways, so you're on your own there.

Again, google it.
