Solved Setting up home VPN, does an easy to follow set of instructions exist?

thank you for the great explanation, Mike. I totally understand now. You said "normally", does this mean I can purchase a router that will allow me to become my own little VPN hosting company? :party:

Yes. That's how they all do it! :)

But such a router is basically nothing more than a router connected to a computer, and of course it has to be running all the time.

nooooooooooooooo, Mike, noooooooooooooo :cry:

You have to realise that routers are basically computers for a specific purpose. You can extend that purpose if you want.

Lots of routers use ( for instance) a linux operating system. This is set up to control the router of course. But if you have the right router, or the knowledge to set one up yourself, then you can make that router do more or less anything you want. Of course there are also hardware limitations. The hardware to carry out certain tasks has to be present!

I use a NAS connected to my router for instance.

well I can get the router i guess, but do I have the knowledge to make it the magical thing I need it to be, i doubt it. Stop teasing me with dreams of things I could never do! :cry:

You can get routers with built in VPN support;

Cisco Systems Cisco Small Business RV016 16-port 10/100 VPN Router - Multi WAN Router - 13-port switch (integrated) - EN, Fast EN

Cisco Systems Cisco Small Business RV042 Dual WAN VPN Router Router - 4-port switch (integrated) - EN, Fast EN

But they are also only of any use if you want to access a running computer. You could use various methods of switching a machine on over the router of course.

This sort of stuff can get very complex very quickly! :)

Entirely possible, but even the best router presently available will not allow you to perceive that over a network.............. :)
