Setting up public and user folders

Impossible dreams? Setting up public and user folders.

Hi.
I would like to move my public and user folders to my second partition. After lack of succes with googling for win7 tutorial of how to do this, i tried this tutorial. However now it is changed in the registry however the computer does not seem to register it.

Here you can see that i mannually moved all the files then changed the registry entry and then created the extra text document to see if i succeded and as you can see I did not.

I would also like to move my other user files (C:\Users\"user") to my 2nd partition (D:\"user"). I know this can be done by properties->location-> move however it would be nice if this would be done automaticly when i add a new user account.
I don't mind trying things in my registry but a little guidance as to what to edit would be nice.

Are my wishes really that difficult to realise? Does no one have a clue or a hint as to why the vista method does not work in 7? No reactions at all. I'm starting to think i am wishing the impossible (this is way i changed the title). How hard can it be to do something in win 7 that you could do in vista and in xp? Please! Someone help me!

Hello Roland, and welcome to Seven Forums.

There is no way to have this done automatically. I strongly would not recommend to move the Public folders since these are shared by all user accounts on the computer, and could cause them to no longer be shared if moved. For your user folders, you might double check with the tutorial below to see if it may help. You may have missed a step somewhere.

This is a risk I am willing to take. Please help me do this 'mannually.'

Using the Public folder tutorial you linked to above, did you restart the computer a couple of times after making the registry changes? Did you create the folder that you used for the new location in the registry setting before changing it?

Yes I followed the instruction word for word. And as you can see in my pic I afterward added the tekst documents and then checked what happend in //kids-pc/users seen as i want it to change there. And it seems like i changed the settings in the registry but the computer has not registered these changes.

I wish I did, but this is one of the reasons why I recommended to not move them. It does not always work out properly with the Public folders. You can undo this if you like by changing the registry settings back to the default public folder locations in the C:\Users\Public folder.

Oh and with the user files you have to move every folder seperately, could i try doing the same with the public folders?

I played with this some more, and I cannot find a reliable way to move any of the Public folders, or the Public folder itself like the user folders. They just will not move locations for me as well.

Dissapointing. I'll try again after the next service pack. Maybe ms will have fixed it by then.

After being dissapointed about your answer I adjusted my registry entries back to as they should be confident that i would not need to move back my files seen as the 'changes were not registered.' However after reboot i was suprised to see the the ie and explore pin in my taskbar did not work. After a bit of looking around i saw alot was changed. Now i was lucky i had just done a windows update so could preform a system restore . (oh yeah need to those again now xD)
I think the public folders have actually been moved. However it seems that in win 7 I will have to delete the old folder and stop them from being shared and then share the new folders. This should work.
